Karl Heinrich Ludwig Eduard Sallentien (born May 12, 1825 in Braunschweig , † February 3, 1897 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian .

Life

Heinrich Sallentien was born in Braunschweig in 1825. His parents were the Brunswick pastor Karl Ludwig Ferdinand Sallentien († 1848) and his wife Friederike Charlotte, born in a Brunswick merchant family. Witting. He studied theology in Jena and Halle (Saale) from 1844 to 1848 . His academic teachers included Karl Hase in Jena and Julius Müller and August Tholuck in Halle . He passed the first theological examination in Braunschweig in September 1848 and then worked for several years as a private tutor. From 1858 to 1860 he was a teacher at the Progymnasium in Braunschweig. In February 1860, Sallentien passed the second theological test. In May 1860 he became a member of the preachers' seminary in Wolfenbüttel and in May 1863 received his first pastor's position in Blankenburg (Harz) . As pastor adjunct at the local parish, he was also head of the local community schools. In the autumn of 1870 he became pastor in Groß-Vahlberg and Bansleben . On May 7, 1875, Duke Wilhelm appointed him to Wolfenbüttel as consistorial councilor . There he was appointed general superintendent in 1880 and consistorial vice-president in 1890, making him the highest-ranking clergyman in the Braunschweig regional church . In 1881 he was made abbot of the Mariental monastery . The University of Rostock awarded him an honorary theological doctorate in 1884 . Like his predecessor Ludwig Ernesti , Sallentien repeatedly presided over the Eisenach Church Conference from 1890 onwards . He was a member of the state assembly from 1891 to 1894 .

Sallentien had been married to Elisabeth Maenß (1844–1916), daughter of the preacher Maenß in Hohendodeleben , since October 19, 1864 . The marriage had nine children, including Viktor Sallentien (* 1885), later director of the Duisburg City Library . Heinrich Sallentien died in February 1897 at the age of 71 in Wolfenbüttel.

Sallentien had significant influence on the Braunschweig regional church, where he was considered a representative of denominational Lutheranism. His influence on the collegiate members of the Wolfenbüttel Preachers' Seminary, which he chaired for 22 years, was equally formative. He did his best to reorganize the agenda and reform the theological tests. Sallentien was a sponsor of the Inner Mission institutions .
