Heinrich Wawra von Fernsee
Heinrich Wawra Ritter von Fernsee (born as Jindřich Blažej Vávra ; born February 2, 1831 in Brno , Moravia , † May 24, 1881 in Baden near Vienna) was a Moravian, k. k. Austrian ship's doctor , botanist and researcher. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wawra ".
Live and act
Heinrich Wawra was the youngest of five brothers. His father was a miller by trade. From 1849 to 1855 he studied medicine and botany at the University of Vienna . After graduating, he joined the Austro-Hungarian Navy on December 6, 1855 , which was under the command of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria .
From 1856 to 1871 he was ship's doctor on various schooners , frigates and corvettes , on which he traveled to Gibraltar , Madeira , Tenerife , Brazil , the Cape of Good Hope , Angola , Ascension , the Cape Verde Islands , Java , Singapore , Thailand , Vietnam , China , Japan , Hawaii , South America , New Zealand , Australia , Ceylon , Hong Kong and Macau sailed.
In 1864 he accompanied Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian a. a. to his enthronement as Emperor of Mexico and the Prince Ludwig August von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha to his marriage in 1884 to Brazil.
From 1872 to 1873 he undertook his first world tour, accompanied by Princes Ferdinand Philipp and Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . After retiring from the navy, from May to August 1879, he accompanied Princes Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his brother Prince Ferdinand on a trip to Brazil.
Honors
His hometown Brno named the previous street in Old Brno (Staré Brno) after Wawra , but this was reversed in 1919. Today this former Silnická ulice is called “Hybešova” (after Josef Hybeš ).
After Heinrich Wawra the bromeliad genus are fernseea Baker , the genus Neowawraea rock of the family of spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and the Gesnerienart Cyrtandra wawrae named.
