Heinrich Adolf von Eck

Heinrich Adolf von Eck (born January 13, 1837 in Gliwice (Upper Silesia), † March 11, 1925 in Stuttgart ) was a German geologist and paleontologist . His focus was on the treatment of the Triassic deposits of the Central European basin .

Heinrich Adolf von Eck was the son of the smeltery inspector Ludwig Eck and his wife Lina , born Bonish . His marriage to his wife Friederike Marie (1841–1917), born in Sondershausen in 1871 . Cannabich, daughter of the senior government councilor Christian Friedrich August Eduard Cannabich, Sondershausen, remained childless.

Life

After a three-year internship in mining in Tarnowitz and Königshütte, Heinrich Adolf Eck studied with Ferdinand von Roemer at the University of Breslau from 1858 to 1861 and then became an employee of the Prussian State Geological Institute . He got a job at the Geological State Institute in Berlin and was employed by the Prussian geological state survey in Thuringia and Silesia. After receiving his doctorate in 1865 ( on the formations of colored sandstone and shell limestone in Upper Silesia ), he completed his habilitation at the Bergakademie Berlin in 1866 . At Easter 1871 he was appointed professor for mineralogy and geology at the Polytechnic in Stuttgart in 1870 , from 1882 to 1885 Heinrich Adolf Eck (from 1884: Heinrich Adolf von Eck) also served as its director. In 1900 he was forced to make his chair available early because of his progressive blindness. His extensive literature work for the development of a complete bibliography of the geological literature of Southwest Germany that had appeared up to that point, which he was also able to publish in two volumes (1890/1893), is now regarded as the cause of his blindness.

Heinrich Adolf Eck's scientific investigations focused primarily on stratigraphy and the fauna of the Triassic of the Central European basin. He is the first to describe the starfish Trichasteropsis ECK, 1879 and the coral Substuoresia vogelsangi (ECK 1879) named in honor of Wolfgang Moritz Vogelgesang .

He was a co-founder of the Württemberg Earthquake Commission.

honors and awards

The brachiopod Dielasma ecki ( Frantzen , 1882) was named in his honor. The so-called Eck'sche conglomerate is named after Heinrich Adolf von Eck , at the base of which in the Black Forest the lower limit of the red sandstone is placed.
