Heinz-Eberhard Opitz

Heinz-Eberhard Opitz (born July 13, 1912 in Halle (Saale) , † October 11, 1997 in Haar ) was a German army officer and judge.

Life

Raised in Breslau , Opitz studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . In 1932 he became a member of the Corps Marcomannia Breslau . He broke off his studies in 1935 and joined the 7th Infantry Regiment in Schweidnitz as a flag boy . Promoted to lieutenant in April 1937 , he was adjutant in the 28th Infantry Regiment. After the invasion of Poland , he was transferred to the 298th Infantry Division . As a regimental adjutant and battalion commander, he fought in the western campaign and on the eastern front . He was battalion commander in the 349th Infantry Division / Volksgrenadier Division , was awarded the German Cross in Gold on April 9, 1943 , and served as Lieutenant Colonel and Regiment Commander of the 911 Grenadier Regiment from June 1, 1944. After the award of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross , which Opitz had received on March 11, 1945, he suffered the fifth wound. The United States Army took him prisoner of war in the Wismar military hospital .

After the war he continued to study law. After the assessor examination, he became chairman of judges at the Munich I Regional Court . In 1975 he retired. In the Bundeswehr he was a lieutenant colonel in the reserve.
