Training and concert activity as a trumpeter

Heinz Zickler was the second child of the trained locksmith Arno Zickler and Elise, nee. Ottmann. From the age of four he received piano lessons from his father, who worked part-time as a piano tuner and also played the organ in church services . Heinz Zickler also sang in the choir and learned the flugelhorn . From the age of 14 he studied with Alfons Patolla, solo trumpeter of the Dresden Philharmonic . He financed his studies by performing at dance events with the piano and accordion . He also received organ lessons from the organist of the Dresden Frauenkirche , Hanns Ander-Donath , whom he also represented on the Silbermann organ of the Frauenkirche.

In 1939, Zickler's training was interrupted when he was obliged to do the Reich Labor Service and military service during World War II. After a period of imprisonment, he became principal trumpeter with the Rundfunk-Tanz-Orchester Dresden under the direction of Rolf Agunte, until the orchestra was disbanded a short time later by the Soviet occupying forces . From 1947 to 1951 he held the position of cantor and organist in Kipsdorf and then at the Emmauskirche in Dresden . In addition, he temporarily led the state Mozart Choir in Dresden. He studied church music at the Leipzig University of Music and was one of the last students of the former Thomas Cantor Karl Straube .

From 1951 to 1953 Zickler played as solo trumpeter at the Staatskapelle Halle ; In 1953 he became the first trumpeter to join the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. In 1956 he used a concert tour to West Germany to accept an engagement as solo trumpeter in the orchestra of the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden .

With the Bach trumpet , Zickler went on concert tours at home and abroad. He completed concerts and tours under conductors such as Günther Ramin , Diethard Hellmann , Karl Richter , Helmuth Rilling , Theodor Egel, Antoine de Baviere, Sigi Stadermann and Wolfgang Gönnenwein with European and American radio and television appearances.

Zickler was the first German trumpeter to appear as a Bach trumpeter in Israel from 1970 , including the performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio as part of the regular Abu Gosh Music Festival under the direction of Sigi Stadermann.

From 1960 Zickler was also a part-time lecturer for trumpet in Mainz at the University of Music and at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory and then gave private lessons until 2006. Among his students are well-known trumpeters such as Wolfgang Basch, Heiner Wellnitz, Tobias Blecher, Bernhard Loos and Richard Töngi.

Activity as a church musician

Zickler had a special collaboration with Diethard Hellmann , under whose direction he performed regularly as a trumpeter with the Bach Orchestra and the Mainz Bach Choir . The SWR broadcast 136 Bach cantatas with the participation of Zickler on the radio. Hellmann also accompanied him on the organ when performing Bach's concerts, arranged for trumpet and organ.

In addition to his work as a trumpeter, since 1973 he has also dedicated himself to church music as an organist and choirmaster in the Protestant church in Wiesbaden-Bierstadt , where he regularly performed Bach cantatas, which were also recorded on vinyl. After moving to the Christ Church of the independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELK) in Wiesbaden in 1988 , he headed the choir there and built a carolers . Here, too, he regularly performed Bach cantatas, as well as oratorios such as the Easter , Ascension and Christmas oratorios . He also directed the women's choir in Wehen near Wiesbaden. After retiring from his position as cantor and choir director due to his age, he still works temporarily in church music, for example in Wackernheim and Hofheim-Wallau , where he still plays the organ and takes over the continuo in performances by the choir and orchestra.

Zickler plans to publish his long-term research on Bach's Canonical Changes together with a CD.
