Bertha Helene Evers (born December 24, 1892 in Schellerten ; † May 16, 1983 in Braunschweig ) was a German actress and stage manager of the Niederdeutsche Volksbühne in Braunschweig .

Life

Helene Evers was born as the eleventh child of Joseph and Katharina Henze in Schellerten near Hildesheim . After a childhood full of privation, she trained as a seamstress , but found no job in this profession. She first worked as a housemaid for a family of innkeepers in Rathenow , before moving to Braunschweig before 1914, where she earned her living in restaurants. In 1916 she married the restorer Karl Evers, who died early.

In June 1925, she responded to an appeal by the Braunschweig student councilor Wilhelm Börker , who asked friends of the Low German language to meet in the Hôtel d'Angleterre on Breite Strasse in the local press . Börker's goal was to found a Low German amateur theater. Helene Evers became a founding member of the new stage and was given the leading female role in the first play, the one-act De first guest by Heinrich Behnken , in November 1925. She began a long and successful acting career with positive press reviews. The Niederdeutsche Volksbühne quickly became known and performed in more than 90 locations in northern Germany by 1945 . She gave guest appearances in the Celle Castle Theater , in the Braunschweig Castle , in the Schauspielhaus in Hanover and on the occasion of Wilhelm Raabe's 100th birthday in the Lessing Theater in Wolfenbüttel .

After the end of the Second World War , the Low German stage was rebuilt with great personal commitment by Evers and led to new successes as an actress and director. On April 11, 1948 she was able to celebrate her 500th appearance in her star role, the Ose von Sylt by the Low German writer Hans Ehrke . In 1967 she resigned her functions as stage director, director and actress for reasons of age and health, but remained closely connected to the Low German Stage, since 1968 as its honorary president.

Evers last lived on Karlstrasse in Braunschweig. She died very old in May 1983.

Honors

For her services to the theater and the Low German language, Evers received the Federal Cross of Merit on December 24, 1954 . She was honored on March 28, 1968 with the Lower Saxony Order of Merit, 1st Class. The Helene-Evers-Weg in Braunschweig is named after her.
