Hans Valentin Gebhard Ludwig von Kotze (born June 9, 1808 in Groß Germersleben , † September 27, 1893 in Hanover ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and chief hunter .

Life

origin

Gebhard came from the Upper Saxon noble family von Kotze and was born in the baroque palace Groß Germersleben, which was destroyed by arson in 1999. He was the youngest of ten siblings of Hans von Kotze (1759-1829) on Großgermersleben and his wife Wilhelmine, née Countess von der Schulenburg (1768-1831) from the Hornhausen family . His most important godfather was Field Marshal Blücher . Groß Germersleben belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia until 1813 , which meant that his parents suffered greater losses.

Military career

Kotze joined the 26th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army in Magdeburg as a musketeer on March 20, 1824 and was promoted to second lieutenant until mid-March 1829 . For further training, he completed the General War School in 1833/36 , was then a battalion adjutant until 1839 and rose to prime lieutenant until mid-December 1845 . In mid-May 1849 Kotze was commanded as a company commander in the 2nd Battalion of the 26th Landwehr Regiment in Burg , and at the beginning of Angust 1849 briefly served as a stage commander in Saarbrücken . After his promotion to captain , he returned to his main regiment with the appointment of chief of the 1st company. In mid-October 1852, Kotze was transferred to the Fusilier Battalion in the 31st Infantry Regiment in Erfurt and in mid-April 1855 he was assigned to the Infantry Training Battalion in Potsdam. There he rose to major at the beginning of February 1856 and from April 26 to May 23, 1856 was entrusted with the command of the 2nd battalion in the 31st Landwehr Regiment in Mühlhausen . On June 14, 1856 he was appointed commander of the 1st battalion in the Kaiser Alexander Grenadier Regiment and during the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Kotze was briefly stage commander at the Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin in the summer of 1859 . As a lieutenant colonel , Kotze was appointed commander of the 1st Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 26 on June 22, 1861 , and was promoted to colonel on October 18, 1861 . He also invited Kotze to the maneuvers of the X Army Corps near Hanover in the autumn of 1881 and awarded him the Order of the Crown, First Class with Swords. In mid-March 1884, the emperor recognized him by awarding him the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves, and on March 22, 1887, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, he appointed him chief hunter master.

Kotze died unmarried and was buried in the Engesohde city cemetery .
