Helhorse was a Danish sludge and stoner rock band from Copenhagen that was founded in 2006 under the name Dødning and split up in 2019.

history

The band was founded in 2006 under the name Dødning by the singer and keyboardist Aske Kristiansen, the guitarists Jakob Møgelvang and Stephan Krabsen, the bassist Jon Kampstrup and the drummer Jesper Bergstedt. Mikkel Wad Larsen joined as a further singer. Through their management, the group achieved appearances along with Black Label Society , 3 Inches of Blood and Exodus . A first self-titled EP was recorded in 2008 and was released in early 2009. After Søren Nybo Hansen joined the group as the new bass player, the band went to Dead Rat Studios to record the debut album For Wolves and Vultures with producer Jacob Bredahl . In the period between recording and release, the band decided to rename it Helhorse. The album was released by Mighty Music in mid-May 2011 . In the same year the band played on the Copenhell . In 2013 Mighty Music released their second album Oh Death . In the following year the group could be seen again on the Copenhell. In 2016 the group was represented for the third time at the Copenhell. A self-titled album was released on Spinefarm Records in the same year. In 2019 the album Hydra, mixed by Tue Madsen, followed on Rodeostar Records / Napalm Records . Towards the end of the year the group announced its breakup.

style

laut.de wrote that the band played a mixture of stoner rock and sludge under their initial name Dødning. Ronny Bittner from Rock Hard classified For Wolves and Vultures between punk , sludge and hardcore punk . However, the singing lacks recognition value. Andreas Himmelstein stated in a later issue that the band has nothing more to offeron Oh Death , “than an inflated sound and a good handful of heavyweight, properly pressing sludge riffs , which may be brief, but absolutely run-of-the-mill - Arrangements and strangling vocal melodies are chased into the realm of insignificance within a few moments ”. Overall, the music could be viewed as more insignificant versions of Clutch , Burner , Down , Mastodon , Red Fang and Kylesa . Holger Stratmann found that the songs of the self-titled album a "always heavy distorted guitars in the Down / Crowbar is style" based on where they "unfortunately significantly duller and less demanding than fail in the models, while the vocals between well-intentioned Volbeat - Timbre , Altar-Bridge - Pathos and undisciplined psycho-nagging commutes ”. There are also keyboard sounds that are reminiscent of The Doors of the 1970s. Overall, he summarized the music as a low-tension sludge. Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard continued to find influences from Stoner Rock and Sludgeat Hydra , which, however, were hidden behind better arranged melodies and choruses. In addition, there would be an influence from Modern Metal . One issue later, Jakob Møgelvang stated in an interview with Andreas Schiffmann that the band used the expressiveness of folk stories about monsters to address everyday things or to draw attention to certain things such as war or climate change.

Joni Küper from Ox-Fanzine described the music of Oh Death as varied Metal , which shows influences from Sludge, Hard Rock and Hardcore Punk. In addition, there are tonal similarities to Black Sabbath and Black Flag .

Thorsten Zahn from Metal Hammer , in his review of For Wolves and Vultures, described the style "Southern Hardcore", which the band called "an energetic mix of a lot of hardcore, lots of stoner rock, some fat Thrash riffs, but also a hearty Seventies- Flair". Occasionally, slight influences from the blues can also be heard. Frank Thießies described Hydra as a mixture of punk, metal, stoner rock and classic rock . Mikkel Wad Larsen's vocals deliver memorable vocal melodies with a strong and distinctive timbre. Overall, he described the group as a slightly tougher version of Gluecifer .
