The helmet ( Italian Monte Elmo ) is a round-nosed 2433  m above sea level. A. high mountain of the Carnic main ridge near Sexten ( South Tyrol ), south above the central Puster Valley .

history

It forms a point on the state border between Austria ( East Tyrol ) and Italy (South Tyrol). On the summit, the ruins of a former refuge, the Helmhütte, are visible from afar . The remains of numerous military buildings from the mountain war of 1915–1918 are still in the area .

geology

The Helm is the westernmost peak of the Carnic Alps and geologically belongs to the southern Grauwackenzone of the Variscan Orogeny (mountain formation) . The round, dome-like shape of the summit is due to the easily erodable layers of porphyry schist that originate from the Paleozoic ( Silurian ) geological era . This outer shape of the helmet was created in principle by the ice cover in the Miocene and extends eastwards in the direction of the Carnic main ridge to the Iron Empire . This gives the area a kind of low mountain range character, which is unusual for the southern central Alps.

tourism

Today the easy-to-climb mountain is a popular excursion destination as a vantage point for the Sesto Dolomites and can be reached by cable cars from both Sexten and Obervierschach . In addition, its western flank is used as a ski area with numerous lifts and easy to moderately difficult runs. It is the western starting point for the Carnic High Trail (path no .: 03), which leads east over 100 kilometers in several variants to Nassfeld . The helmet is also known for its hiking trails and the flora and fauna.
