Helmut Ringsdorf
Helmut Ringsdorf (born July 30, 1929 in Gießen ) is a German chemist .
life and work
Ringsdorf studied chemistry, politics and geology at the universities of Frankfurt am Main , Darmstadt and Freiburg im Breisgau from 1951 . He was the last student Hermann Staudinger and wrote under his care in 1956 his thesis and Staudinger and Elfriede Husemannstraße 1958 his dissertation . Ringsdorf remained for some time as an assistant in Freiburg before moving to New York City as a research assistant at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1960 . In 1962, he switched to teaching at the University of Marburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1967 . He was associate professor there from 1967 to 1968 and professor for polymer sciences from 1969 to 1970 , before coming to Mainz University in 1971 . As a professor of organic chemistry he taught there until his retirement in 1994. In addition and afterwards he held various professorships abroad: 1988 to 2003 he was associate professor for polymer science at the Chinese Jilin University , 1994 to 2000 associate professor for pharmacy at the University of London , Courtauld Visiting Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1995 to 2000 and Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Cardiff University from 2001 to 2005 .
Ringsdorf works in the fields of organic chemistry , polymer science, supramolecular systems and nanomedicine. At the interface between materials and life sciences , he designed pharmacologically active polymers and investigated the biochemistry at interfaces. He developed polymeric anti-tumor agents that can specifically penetrate the blood vessels created by angiogenesis and can thus be used in a targeted manner for the treatment of cancer . He is also concerned with the synthesis, structure and properties of functional liquid-crystalline polymers as well as with polymerisation in oriented systems ( micelles , liposomes , monolayers ). He also studies the properties of functional supramolecular systems and conducts experiments to simulate biomembrane processes.
Ringsdorf has been married to Margot Kimpel, with whom he has two children, Ulrike and Martin, since he was a doctoral student.
