from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henky Hentschel (* 1940 in Ulm ; † August 20, 2012 in Havana ) was a German writer.

Life

Henky Hentschel studied sociology and ethnology . In 1970 he was a co-founder of the "Release Heidelberg" municipality, the first German drug aid organization. He then managed an ecological farm on the Italian island of Elba for 13 years.

He worked as a television author for ZDF (for programs such as aspekte , Impulse and documentaries), WDR television and Süddeutscher Rundfunk , as well as a print author for various magazines (e.g. Stern , Spiegel , Playboy , Die Gazette , Tempo , GEO , Merian ) as well as various daily and weekly newspapers (e.g. Zeit , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Woche , Preussische Allgemeine Zeitung ) and other media.

He has published numerous books in various genres aimed at children, young people and adults, and in which he processed his fascination for the Caribbean or his own life experiences as a gambler and dropout .

Henky Hentschel lived and worked in the Caribbean ( Guadeloupe and Guatemala ) since 1990 and in Havana since 1994 , where he died on August 20, 2012 under unknown circumstances. He is buried in the Cementerio Cristóbal Colón in Havana.

The photographer and journalist Sven Creutzmann wrote in his obituary in the Süddeutsche Zeitung :

“Now, in the middle and end of the 1990s, Hentschel has finally arrived. Perhaps as the only German abroad, he really lives among the Cubans and describes this in brilliant texts in books and reports. (…) The week before last, Henky Hentschel finally ran away under mysterious circumstances, similar to his alter ego at the end of the “moult”. This time not on the way to a new Caribbean island, but somewhere to look for new trouble there . "

- Sven Creutzmann : Süddeutsche Zeitung of September 5, 2012

In honor of Hentschel, a corner pub in Old Havana bears the name "Henky's Bar".
