Henry A. Byroade

Henry Alfred Byroade (born July 24, 1913 in Maumee Township , Allen County , Indiana ; † December 31, 1993 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American brigadier general in the US Army and diplomat who served as Assistant Secretary from 1952 to 1955 of State for Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affairs was Head of the Middle East, South Asia and Africa Division at the US State Department . He was also Ambassador of the United States to Egypt from 1955 to 1956 , Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1959 to 1962 , Ambassador to the Philippines from 1969 to 1973 and, most recently, Ambassador to Pakistan from 1973 to 1977 .

Life

Henry Alfred Byroade, son of Ernest C. Byroade and his wife Carrie Byroade, began an officer training at the US Military Academy in West Point after attending school . Once finished with a Bachelor of Science (BS), he was in 1937 as a lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) Corps of Engineers (Corps of Engineers) in the US Army adopted. He completed postgraduate studies at Cornell University (MS) in 1940 and served as a Colonel in the theater of war in China , British India and Burma between 1942 and 1944 . For his services there he was awarded the Legion of Merit twice. After his return he found between 1944 and 1945 use in the General Staff in the US War Department and received the legion of merit there for his services. In 1945 he became a military attaché at the embassy in the Republic of China . After his promotion to Brigadier General at the age of only 32, he was also awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal in 1946 for his services . After retiring from military service, he moved to the US State Department as a Foreign Service Officer in 1949 and was initially acting deputy director of the Germany and Austria unit (Acting Deputy Director, Bureau of German and Austrian Affairs) for a short time and then between November 1, 1949 and his replacement by James W. Riddleberger on April 13, 1952 Head of the Germany Department (Director, Bureau of German Affairs) . On April 14, 1952, he succeeded George C. McGhee as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affairs and was thus head of the Middle East, South Asia and Africa subdivision in the State Department. He held this post until January 25, 1955, when he was replaced by George V. Allen .

Byroade himself was appointed Ambassador of the United States to Egypt on January 24, 1955 , and handed over his accreditation there on March 7, 1955 as the successor to Jefferson Caffery . He held this post until September 10, 1956, when Raymond A. Hares succeeded him. He himself was appointed ambassador to the Union of South Africa on July 26, 1956 and presented his credentials on October 9, 1956 as the successor to Edward T. Wailes . He held this position until January 24, 1959 and was then replaced by Philip K. Crowe . Subsequently, on January 29, 1959, he was appointed ambassador to Afghanistan , where he handed over his letter of accreditation on March 21, 1959 as the successor to Sheldon T. Mills . He held this office until January 19, 1962 and was then replaced by John M. Steeves .

On September 10, 1963, Henry A. Byroade was named United States Ambassador to Burma and presented his credentials on October 7, 1963 to succeed John Scott Everton . He held this position until June 11, 1968, when Arthur William Hummel, Jr. took his place there. He himself was then appointed ambassador to the Philippines on July 22, 1969 and handed over his accreditation there on August 29, 1969 as the successor to G. Mennen Williams . He held this position until May 25, 1973 and was then replaced by William H. Sullivan . Most recently he was appointed ambassador to Pakistan on October 15, 1973 , where he succeeded Joseph S. Farland on December 5, 1973 with his credentials. He remained in this post until April 23, 1973 and was then replaced by Arthur William Hummel, Jr. again.

After retiring from the diplomatic service, Byroade, who was also a board member for the Afghanistan Relief Committee , was Vice President for Pakistan of the aircraft manufacturer Northrop Corporation between 1977 and 1979 . He was married twice, from 1937 until their divorce in 1961 to Mary K. Richard. From this marriage the three sons Gene, John and Alan Byroade were born. His second marriage to Jitka Donda Henson in 1962 also resulted in the daughter Linda Byroade Griffin. After his death from heart failure, he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
