Henry James Drory - baptized on November 5, 1837 in the Jerusalem Church in Berlin as Henry Julius Drory (born September 2, 1837 in Berlin , † July 24, 1899 in Vienna ) was a British technician who mainly worked in Vienna. He was one of the 17 children of Elizabeth Skinner and Leonard Drory (1800-1866), who worked in Germany, especially in Berlin, for the London Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA) and also made sure that several of his sons were with the ICGA were employed.

From 1856, Henry James Drory was an employee of the company, which was active in various countries on the continent and built and operated gas works in Vienna's suburbs and suburbs from the 1840s.

In 1865 he became head of the gasworks in the Viennese suburb of Fünfhaus , shortly afterwards head of the Erdberg gasworks in the 3rd district and in 1881 director of the kk priv. Gas lighting establishment of the Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA), for a time the leading supplier of gas lighting in Vienna. Drory was also the technical director of the ICGA gas stations in Komotau , Saaz , Graslitz and Brüx in Bohemia and the gas works in Neutra (now Slovakia ) and Esseg (now Croatia ), then in Hungary .

The Vienna branch of the ICGA had its headquarters in the 1st district, Bauernmarkt 8. In 1883, Drory moved the company headquarters to the Palais Epstein on the Ringstrasse in the 1st district, which his company bought in 1876 . Drory then lived with his wife and children on the 2nd floor of the palace, which was used by the ICGA until 1902. (It was bought by the state in 1902, which housed the Administrative Court here.)

Henry James Drory's brother Edward (1844–1904), like his father, worked for the ICGA in Berlin. Like Henry, he went to Vienna and became head of the Zwischenbrücken gas works . In 1881 he became vice president of the First Vienna Rowing Club LIA , founded in 1863 , for which he also took part in races. On April 21, 1886, he founded the Union Yacht Club in Vienna and subsequently the clubs on Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee , both in Upper Austria , as well as the Club on Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia . After many sailing trips, including on the Old Danube near Vienna and on Lake Neusiedl in what was then German West Hungary , Edward Drory completed a sailing trip around the world in 1887, and from September 22, 1891 he was on the board of the Austrian Rowing Association (for LIA ) , whose second president he became in 1895. In 1896 he returned permanently to Berlin.

Henry James Drory died in the summer of 1899 and was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery. At the end of 1899, a contract with which the municipality of Vienna commissioned the ICGA with the gas lighting of the inner districts of Vienna expired. In the outskirts, the ICGA was able to continue to operate for some time, but was gradually pushed out of the market by the city administration with its own gas works (opening of the Simmering gas works in 1899 ).

In the immediate vicinity of the Erdberg gasworks managed by Drory, which ceased operations in 1899, a side street on the Erdberger Lände on the Danube Canal (around today's No. 36) was named Drorygasse around 1900 ; it has not been accessible from the land since the 1960s, as the alley section has been removed from the road network and integrated into an operational area. Today you can reach the alley from Erdbergstraße.
