Life

Edward Drory was a son of the English gas entrepreneur Leonard Drory (1800–1866), who built and managed gas works in Germany, especially in Berlin, for the London Imperial Continental Gas Association . Leonard Drory also worked for this company in Berlin. In 1876 he went to Vienna to support his brother Henry James Drory in running the gas works. As the successor to his father and brother Leonard George Drory (1823-1896), Edward Drory took over the position of director of the gas works on Gitschiner Strasse in Berlin in 1896. He had the Oberspree, Grünau and Mariendorf gas works built (1900/01) and helped set up the gas works in Rixdorf. He managed the gas works until his death in 1904, and was succeeded by Ernst Körting junior (1862–1945).

He was an avid beekeeper and compiled an extensive specialist library on the subject of beekeeping , which his widow donated to the Zoological Museum in Berlin in 1905 after his death .

Edward Drory was also an avid sailor and was initially a member of the tavern society. In 1867 he was one of the co-founders of the Berlin Sailing Club . During his time in Austria he co-founded several yacht clubs , for example the Union Yacht Club in Vienna on April 21, 1886 and subsequently the clubs on Lake Attersee and Lake Traunsee , both in Upper Austria , and the club on Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia . After many sailing trips, including on the Old Danube near Vienna and on Lake Neusiedl in what was then western Hungary , Edward embarked on a sailing trip around the world in 1887.
