Herbert Scarf (2012)

Herbert Eli Scarf (born July 25, 1930 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † November 15, 2015 in Sag Harbor , New York ) was an American economist and mathematician . The university professor is considered to be one of the founders of applied equilibrium analysis .

Career, research and teaching

Scarf first studied at Temple University , which he left in 1951 after graduating as an Artium Baccalaureus for Princeton University . There he completed his master’s degree the following year , and in 1954 he graduated with a Ph.D. in math .

Scarf's first job after graduation was at RAND Corporation in Santa Monica , California . 1957 he became an assistant professor in the statistical department of Stanford University , later he rose at the College for Associate Professor at. In 1959/60 he was for the first time as a visiting professor at Yale University , which appointed him full professor in 1963. There he took over the Stanley Resor Chair for Economics in 1970 , and in 1979 he received the Sterling Professorship at the university.

Scarf's work focused on topics in particular game theory and general equilibrium theory . In the late 1960s, Scarf developed an approach to estimate the parameters in an Arrow-Debreu model using empirical data using numerical methods . His algorithm proved to be particularly suitable for programming and thus quickly established itself for calculations of general equilibrium models . In the following years, in particular in collaboration with the Norwegian Terje Hansen, he deepened his knowledge, and for their work summarized in the book The Computation of Economic Equilibria , both received the 1973 Frederick W. Lanchester Prize . Further important results of Scarf are the proof under which conditions cooperative games converge against equilibrium models, and the proof to what extent models do not lead to stable equilibria.

Between 1967 and 1984 Scarf headed the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics at Yale University at various intervals ; In addition, in the early 1970s he was temporarily director of the Division of Social Sciences at the educational institution. Since 1963 a member of the Econometric Society , he was president of the organization in 1983. From 1991 to 1994 he also headed the economics department of the National Academy of Sciences , of which he had become a member in 1976. Since 1971 he has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and since 1993 the American Philosophical Society .
