Herbert Körbs

Herbert Körbs (born October 8, 1907 in Pößneck ; † May 17, 1983 in Magdeburg ) was a German actor and director .

Life

Herbert Körbs was born into a middle-class family. Growing up in Weimar , he found his way to the theater as an extra at the age of twelve. After a commercial apprenticeship, he took private acting lessons from Carl Schreiner . At the age of 22 he got his first engagement at the German National Theater in Weimar. He was then engaged for two seasons at the Freiberg Theater from 1930 to 1932 . From 1932 to 1940 he worked at the theater in Meiningen , which shaped him strongly for his further artistic career. Here he also made his directorial debut with The Merchant of Venice . From 1940 he was a senior director and actor at the Stadttheater Görlitz until he had to interrupt his artistic work as a soldier in the Second World War from September 1944 .

After the end of the war, the Stadttheater Jena (1945 to 1949) and the theaters in Halberstadt and Leipzig (with guest directors) were his places of work, before he worked for six years at the Stadttheater Zittau as a director and actor from 1950 . In 1957 he was brought to the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in Magdeburg as an actor and director by his long-time friend Heinz Isterheil . Herbert Körbs directed more than 40 plays and often appeared on stage as an actor himself. From 1956 he worked as an actor in more than 30 roles with DEFA and television. In 1975, after more than 46 years of dedicated work at and in the theater, he took a well-earned retirement.

Herbert Körbs met his future wife, the actress Hildegard Dreyer , at the Meininger Theater , with whom he often appeared on stage, including in 1935 as the classic lovers Ferdinand and Luise in Friedrich Schiller's Kabale und Liebe . Their daughter Ursula Körbs was also on stage as a child and also became an actress.
