Herman Flesche (born October 21, 1886 in Rheinbrohl ; † January 4, 1972 in Braunschweig ) was a German architect , painter , art historian and writer .

Life

Flesche studied art history from 1906 to 1908 and then architecture until 1913 at the Technical University of Braunschweig . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier . In 1919 he became a Dr.-Ing. doctorate and worked as an assistant at the chair for building construction at the Technical University of Braunschweig. During his work as a city architect from 1919 to 1924, he completed his habilitation in 1921. In 1924 he became a full professor at the Braunschweig architecture faculty. Since 1949 he was a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

Settlement construction and old town renovation

Flesche designed the Braunschweig Siegfriedviertel from 1920 and the Lehndorf settlement from 1921 to 1932 . From 1933 to 1939 he was in charge of the old town renovation that he initiated in 1932. The poor hygienic conditions in the narrow, medieval half-timbered houses in the Braunschweig city center required a renovation, for which Flesche had already drawn up plans in the 1920s. It was not until the National Socialist regime that the renovation was implemented under Flesche's voluntary management. The work was mainly carried out in the Neustadt , whereby the loss of the old living space resulted in the move of many residents to the new settlements such as Lehndorf. The renovation work was stopped soon after the start of the war in 1939. During the bombing of October 15, 1944 , the old town of Braunschweig was almost completely destroyed.

Flesche had been a member of the NSDAP since May 1, 1933 . He was suspended in 1946, but was later re-admitted to university. From 1946 to 1952 he was an expert member of the municipal planning committee.

He retired in 1954 and died in Braunschweig in 1972. The Flescheweg is named after him there.

Works

Flesche built the public library in Braunschweig from 1926 to 1927 and the Alte Waage commercial vocational school in 1937. He designed several graves and monuments, such as the Braunschweig colonial monument erected in 1925 . He rebuilt the Achtermannsche Haus , which was destroyed during the Second World War , from 1947 to 1949.

As an autodidactic painter, he was chairman of the “Association of Visual Artists”. Flesche's works are also exhibited in the Braunschweig Municipal Museum .
