Hermann Becker (lawyer)

Hermann Becker (born April 13, 1719 in Rostock , † February 26, 1797 in Greifswald ) was a German legal scholar and consistorial director .

Life

Hermann Becker came from the Rostock scholarly Becker family, which goes back to his grandfather Hermann Becker (1632–1681) . He was the son of Peter Becker (1672–1753), professor of mathematics and pastor at the Jakobikirche in Rostock, and his wife Margaretha Cäcilia, daughter of the Rostock mayor Thielke. He was taught by private tutors and studied law from 1733 to 1741 at the University of Rostock . He then worked as an educator for the von Kamptz family on Koppelow near Güstrow . From 1742 he accompanied the brothers Gosmann (Gußmann) from Lübeck to the universities of Halle and Leipzig . He continued his studies at the University of Jena continued and in October 1746 Rostock doctorate . In the following year he became professor of institutions (rights) and, after the university was relocated, taught criminal law in Bützow from 1762 .

In 1769 Hermann Becker was appointed to the University of Greifswald , where he also became director of the Greifswald consistory and worked for over 30 years. His main field of activity was canon law , based on Georg Ludwig Böhmer . In 1772 and 1791 he was elected rector of the university.
