Life

Klaje was born in 1868 as the son of a dye works owner in Schlawe in Pomerania . He first attended schools in Schlawe and then the Bugenhagen grammar school in Treptow an der Rega , where he passed the school leaving examination in 1886 . He then studied history, geography and classical philology at the University of Jena and the University of Greifswald . In Greifswald, the historian Heinrich Ulmann made the most lasting impression on Klaje. 1890 Klaje was with a dissertation on The Battle of Guinegate of 7 VIII. 1479 Dr. phil. PhD; The doctoral supervisor was Heinrich Ulmann.

Klaje embarked on the career of a high school teacher . After stints at high schools in Kolberg , Köslin and Dramburg , he became an assistant teacher at the Progymnasium in his home town of Schlawe in 1894. In 1898 he got a job at the Domgymnasium Kolberg , where he worked until his retirement in 1932.

The field of his scientific activity was the history of Pomerania , especially the military history . For this purpose he undertook study trips to German and foreign archives. As the first fruit of this research, he published an episode in the Thirty Years' War The incursion of the imperial sergeant-general Joachim Ernst von Krockow in Western Pomerania from 1643 (1901). This was followed by work on various acts of war that had affected Pomerania, in particular on the siege of Kolberg in 1807 and Kolberg's defender Joachim Nettelbeck . Klaje published numerous articles in the Baltic Studies and in the monthly newspapers of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology , as well as several articles on educational topics. Klajes writings are characterized by a conservative Prussian attitude.

In 1945, Klaje's home in the Pomerania region came under Polish administration. He died on August 28, 1945 in a Berlin hospital.
