Hermann Rassow

Hermann Rassow (born August 16, 1819 in Wolgast ; † January 3, 1907 in Bremen ) was a German philologist and high school teacher in Dresden, Stettin, Greifswald, Berlin and Weimar. Most recently, he was responsible for overseeing the grammar school system in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach .

Life

As a merchant's son, Rassow entered the tertia of the Stralsund grammar school in 1830 . In the autumn of 1838 he passed the final examination with distinction. Enrolled at the Friedrichs-Universität Halle for Protestant Theology , he attended lectures with Wilhelm Gesenius , August Tholuck , Johann Eduard Erdmann and Gottfried Bernhardy . In 1839 he was in the Corps Borussia Halle recipiert . He moved to the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and studied theology with Ferdinand Christian Baur and Eduard Zeller and philosophy with Friedrich Vischer . In the spring of 1841 he traveled down the Rhine to the Netherlands. In Bonn he visited Ernst Moritz Arndt . He did not feel comfortable at the theological faculty of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin ( Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg ). After severe internal struggles, he switched from theology to classical philology . In those years, August Boeckh , Karl Lachmann and Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg at the Berlin University were at the height of their effectiveness. Rassow especially joined Trendelenburg. In the summer of 1841 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. The following spring he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post.

From Easter 1844 he completed his probationary year at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium (Berlin) . After half a year at the educational seminar in Stettin , he took up a teaching position at the Vitzthum-Blochmann educational institution in Dresden in autumn 1845 . He returned to Stettin at Easter 1847 and took a full teaching post at the Marienstiftsgymnasium . Here he stayed eight and a half years. In the autumn of 1855 he was appointed vice rector at the Greifswald grammar school . Two years later he switched to the Joachimsthal High School in Berlin. There he taught Greek and German in first class. He was able to utilize his experiences from Dresden in the management of the alumnate . In October 1860 he took over the management of the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in Weimar. He taught Greek, German and Latin. After the wars of German unification , the school authorities of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach needed an expert advisor. On October 1, 1876, Rassow was entrusted with the technical report on the higher education system, and on February 21, 1877 also with the supervision of the school leaving examination. On May 30, 1877 he received the title of high school councilor. Because of an eye disease, he was released from the management of the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium at Easter 1881 and limited to the ministerial supervision of the higher education system. After 27 years in the Weimar civil service, he retired on January 1, 1887. At the age of 80 he moved to live with his son in Bremen. He was married to Mathilda born in 1850. Broman from Stockholm. The Reich judge Friedrich Rassow was a brother.
