Hermann Ramberg , since 1849 Freiherr von Ramberg (* 24. November 1820 in Vienna , † 26 December 1899 in Graz ) was an imperial Austrian cavalry general .

Hermann was the son of the kuk Feldmarschallleutnant Georg Heinrich von Ramberg . Father Georg and his children were raised to the hereditary Austrian baron status in Vienna on July 25, 1849 with a diploma from January 22, 1850 .

His brother was the painter and draftsman Arthur Freiherr von Ramberg (1819–1875). His great-uncle was the Hanoverian painter and draftsman Johann Heinrich Ramberg (1763-1840), his nephew was the marine painter August von Ramberg (1866-1947).

Life

Ramberg received his schooling, together with his brother, from private tutors. After he had received the Matura ( Abitur ) as an "external" in Vienna , he began to study law at the University of Prague . In 1841 he left the university without a degree and joined the Austro-Hungarian cavalry as a cadet .

As early as 1847 Ramberg was promoted to Rittmeister and as such took part in a cuirassier regiment in the wars of 1848–49. In 1849 he was an orderly officer in Hungary for the Russian general Fyodor Panutine .

Nine years later he took over the 1st Cuirassier Regiment as a lieutenant colonel . In 1866 he was promoted to colonel and as such was entrusted with the management of the Braunschweig cuirassiers (No. 7) with which he fought against the Prussians .

Two years later he became a major general and brigade - commander of Pecs added. In 1874 Ramberg was promoted to military commander of Pressburg , where he commanded the 14th division of the Austro-Hungarian army as a field marshal lieutenant and commander . With effect from August 21, 1878, the Kaiser personally appointed him commander of the 5th Army Corps , which was deployed in Bosnia . After Austria gave up its occupation in 1881, Ramberg was transferred to Agram as Commanding General .
