history

The place was first mentioned in 1144. The place belonged to the Amt of Maßfeld in the county of Henneberg -Schleusingen. In 1680 he came to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen .

Hermannsfeld was persecuted by witches from 1600 to 1661 : seven people were indicted in the witch trials , four people were executed, the outcome of three trials is unknown. The first victim was Brigitta Scharfenberg.

Hermannsfelder See

The large meadow area west of the village was a fish-rich lake of around 100  hectares , called "Hermannsfelder See". The fishing was repeatedly combined with a large folk festival with the participation of the sovereign, until Duke George I had the lake drained and converted into meadows.

The famous pilgrimage chapel of St. Wolfgang, built in 1462/76 by Wilhelm III , stood on an island connected to the land by a dam . von Henneberg built in place of a previous building and destroyed by the farmers in 1525. Only remnants of the defensive wall of the chapel that was abandoned in the 16th century are preserved.

In the fish house , which once belonged to the lake, a "rescue house for neglected children" was housed in 1860, which existed for almost 100 years. In the Middle Ages, there was a bower above it , called the "tower". It was left to various castle men to defend itself and was also destroyed in 1525.

Pheasantry

The Fasanerie hunting lodge was built around 1790 in the classical style. It is a two-story building with a three-story central building. It was built by Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen . The castle is surrounded by a park, which is followed by a nature trail . There is a historic forester's house in the immediate vicinity. Until autumn 2010 the pheasantry was used as a restaurant and information center in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve .
