Hermsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1121.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Hermsdorf, Ackendorf , Bebertal , Eichenbarleben , Groß Santersleben , Hohenwarsleben , Irxleben , Niederndodeleben , Nordgermersleben , Ochtmersleben , Schackensleben and Wellen merged to form the new community of Hohe Börde.

For the district Hermsdorf was a village Constitution introduced. The local council of Hermsdorf consists of 7 members.

The coat of arms was approved on October 21, 1996 by the Magdeburg Regional Council.
