Rulers of Time (1982) is a French science fiction cartoon by René Laloux (director) based on the novella L'Orphelin de Perdide ("The Orphan Boy of Perdida") by Stefan Wul .

action

The orphan boy Piel is on his own on the planet Perdida after his parents were killed in an attack by giant insects called hornets . Shortly before his father's death, he got a microphone from his father, with which he can keep in contact with the crew of friends of a distant spaceship on which there is a similar microphone. The ship now makes its way to Perdida to save the boy, and his crew goes through a series of adventures in the process.

During a stopover on the planet Devil's Ball, you don't just take the old spaceman Silbad with you on your journey. The two good-natured gnomes Jad and Yula, who are capable of telepathy , also sneak onto the ship, who suffer from the "bad" thoughts of some actors. There is also a landing on the planet Gamma 10, on which faceless winged beings turn out to be unified, manipulated individuals and are freed from the occupation.

Eventually the ship actually approaches Perdida, but wrecks before it can reach him. The crew members find themselves on a huge space station. As it turns out, the spaceman Silbad and the orphan boy Piel are one and the same person. The rulers of the time had moved Perdida back 60 years in order to be able to settle it better.

criticism

“The time puzzle that serves as the punchline of the story should be difficult to solve for smaller children. Otherwise a lively, excellently drawn animation film with humor and ingenuity, full of bizarre adventures and scenes without superficial violence, which brings out the drawing art of the comic artist Moebius well. "
