Hieronymus Baumgartner came from the Nuremberg patrician family von Paumgartner auf Lonnerstadt , who later called themselves Paumgartner von Holnstein and Grünsberg . He was born the son of a councilor and received his education from Jakob Locher in Ingolstadt and Leipzig . In 1518 he was at the University of Wittenberg enrolled, where he together with Georg Major and Joachim Camerarius the Elder at Philipp Melanchthon wrong. Here he studied philosophy, mathematics and law and, under the influence of Melanchthon and Martin Luther, began studying ancient languages.

After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown as a staunch Lutheran and took part in local politics there. In 1525 he became a senator in the city council, in 1533 old mayor, 1549 senior lord and in 1553 third captain. The city handed over to him as the first church clerk the management of the entire church and school system. In 1549 he was a member of the Septemvirate and 1558 of the Triumvirate of the city. In this function he took part in diets , conventions and city days, including the Nuremberg Religious Discussion in 1525 .

In 1526 he ran with Melanchthon and Lazarus Spengler the establishment of the first humanistic grammar school in Germany in Nuremberg - the later Melanchthong grammar school . In 1528 he took part in church visits. He represented Nuremberg in 1529 at the Reichstag in Speyer , in 1530 at the Reichstag in Augsburg and in 1536 when the constitution of the Schmalkaldic Confederation was revised at the convent in Schmalkalden . He also played a key role in the introduction of the Reformation in the Palatinate offices of Heideck , Hilpoltstein and Allersberg, which were pledged to Nuremberg . He also laid the foundation for the first library in Nuremberg.

When he returned from the Reichstag in Speyer in 1544 , he was captured by the knight Albrecht von Rosenberg in the forest of Treschklingen . He was only released for a ransom after 14 months.

As a supporter of the Reformation, he was reluctant to push through the Augsburg Interim . Katharina von Bora , who later became Martin Luther's wife, had once been appointed as his wife; however, he married Sybilla Dichtlin († 1567) in Nuremberg in 1526 , the daughter of the ducal guardian of Starnberg Bernhard Tichtel (Dichtel) from Tutzing.
