Karl Theodor Hippolyt Hugo Wirth (born November 6, 1821 in Munich , † October 2, 1878 in Karlsruhe ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Origin and family

Hippolyt Wirth was a son of the Bavarian Rittmeister a. D. Johann Hugo Wirth († 1832) and Karoline, née Freiin von Lotzbeck (1796–1835). He remained unmarried throughout his life.

Military career

Wirth attended the educational institute in Stetten before he joined the Baden Leib-Dragoons regiment as a carbineer in 1829 . In 1839 he was promoted to private , in 1840 to corporal , in 1841 to portepeefähnrich and secondary lieutenant , and in 1847 to first lieutenant . In 1849 he stood at the cavalry depot no. 3 and in 1850 changed first to the 2nd cavalry regiment , then again to the 1st cavalry regiment . Also in 1850 he became regimental adjutant . In 1854 he was promoted to Rittmeister in the 3rd Dragoon Regiment . In 1858 he returned to the 1st (body) dragoon regiment . When he was promoted to major , he again moved to the 2nd Dragoons Regiment "Margrave Maximilian" and became the commander of this regiment when he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1866 . He took part in the campaign against Prussia and was promoted to colonel in 1869 . In the Franco-Prussian War he took part in the siege of Strasbourg and the battles for Belfort and the Lisaine . For his work on the Lisaine he was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. In 1871 he was taken over as commander of Karlsruhe in the Association of the Prussian Army and, while retaining his position, was placed à la suite of Dragoon Regiment No. 21 a little later . His promotion to major general took place in 1874 and in 1877 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves.
