Hobarrow Bay

Hobarrow Bay is a small secluded bay west of Kimmeridge , on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula , in the county of Dorset , on the south coast of England .
location
Hobarrow Bay is just over a kilometer southeast of the ghost village of Tyneham and about six kilometers south of Wareham . The bay is about 13 kilometers west of Swanage .
Hobarrow Bay lies between Brandy Bay and Charnel , bounded by Long Ebb in the west and Broad Bench in the east. The bay is about 500 meters long, the cliffs are between 20 and 30 meters high. The pebbly beach is made up of almost horizontal rocks from Kimmeridge Clay (mainly oil shale , see below). The beach is only accessible on foot from Kimmeridge Bay or by boat. Access to Hobarrow Bay is prohibited to the public. The property is owned by the United Kingdom Department of Defense and forms part of the Lulworth Military Range's Armored Fighting Vehicles Gunnery School . The coastal path is open on weekends. Hikers are warned not to leave the footpath, because only this is cleared by duds .
Jurassic Coast
Hobarrow Bay is part of the so-called Jurassic Coast . From Orcombe Point near Exmouth to Old Harry Rocks east of Studland Bay stretches a 155-kilometer stretch of coastline in east Devon and in Dorset, which was the first natural landscape in England to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
The intricate geology of the Isle of Purbeck is evident in the Jurassic Coast. The rock formations along the coast fall Although generally a north, the axis of the parent fold structure of Purbeck Monoclinic but dive to the east. Therefore, the oldest part is found in the west of the area, the cliffs further east are built from younger rocks. The large-scale fold structure of the Purbeck Monocline is dominated by smaller special folds on a kilometer scale and disturbances .
The outcrops along the coast show a continuous sequence of geological deposits formed in the Triassic , Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and represent around 185 million years of geological history . The rocks are known for their fossils , including ammonites and remains of dinosaurs .

Hobarrow Bay is built entirely from rocks from the calcareous Kimmeridge Clay , which was deposited about 155 million years ago. The upper part of the Kimmeridge Clay belongs to the Kimmeridgium . The brown, shallow clay stones of Hobarrow Bay are the oldest exposed parts of the Kimmeridge Clay in the Kimmeridge Cliffs.
The long, flat ridge below the cliffs between Hobarrow Bay and Brandy Bay is called Long Ebb , a rocky cliff made of hard dolomite of the Flats Dolomite Beds protruding into the sea . Very clearly visible in the cliff wall is a displacement that falls almost vertically . The rock layers in the west are shifted almost 10 meters upwards at the fault . Because of the displacement, claystone layers are visible, which normally lie below the dolomites. At Long Ebb the following rock layers are present: Washing Ledge (dolomite), Maple Ledge (also dolomite), Cattle Ledge , Gray Ledge , Blackstone (an oil shale ) and the White Stone Band , which is mainly made up of coccolith . The stratification is inclined at about 10 to 20 degrees to the west.
Due to the fact that the harder limestone and sandstones are underlain by an unstable, essentially clayey rock, the cliffs are prone to landslides .
