The Birkenkofel ( Italian Croda dei Baranci ) is a 2922 m high mountain in the Haunold group in the Sesto Dolomites in South Tyrol ( Italy ). Together with the Hochebenkofel ( Cima Piatta Alta , 2905 m ), the Mitterebenkofel ( 2870 m ) and the Unterebenkofel ( 2581 m ) it forms a mighty massif connected by ridges . Between Mitterebenkofel and Unterebenkofel lies the Eben (kofel) scharte at 2510 m . The entire area is under protection in the Drei Zinnen nature park .
location
The Birkenkofel is about 10 kilometers as the crow flies south-southeast of Toblach in the Puster Valley . In the north it is bordered by the Birkental , in the east by the Innerfeldtal , in the south by the Hangenalpltal and Schafalm and in the west by the Höhlensteintal .
First ascent
The Birkenkofel was first climbed on July 17, 1880 by Ludwig Grünwald, led by Santo Siorpaes.
Base and easy tours
The base for climbing the Birkenkofel is the Dreischusterhütte ( Rifugio Tre Scarperi , 1626 m slm ). Then further south-west over the northeast ridge in three hours over rugged terrain of difficulty UIAA I to the summit. Easier is the path from the Dreischusterhütte to the Lückele-Scharte and then over the marked path to the Hochebenkofel and then to the Birkenkofel via a short, secured climbing section.
