The Hagerwald flood retention basin . Often called Hagerwaldsee for short , is a dam in the Hinterer Welzheimer Wald natural area in the catchment area of the Lein .

Geographical location

The Hagerwaldsee dams the lower reaches of the Finsteren Rot , the right upper reaches of the first red in the direction of flow of the Lein , which flows into it from the left at the Voggenberger Sägmühle in Alfdorf . It is located on the western edge of the Alfdorf suburb of Vordersteinenberg . A few steps away from the west bank, the municipal boundary runs to the town of Welzheim , and the lake is named after the Hagerwald forest area that is immediately adjacent . The north bank is almost touched by the municipal boundary here with Kaisersbach .

description

The lake in the southeastern direction of flow of the Finsteren Rot, about 370 meters long and about 100 meters wide, usually has a surface of 3.0 ha at an altitude of about 455  m above sea level. NN with a long side bay to the west, through which the second and smaller tributary Schmerbach flows . This drains just under a tenth of the catchment area of around 13.7 km². During floods, the lake can cover an area of up to 18 hectares, the accumulated water volume then swell from a permanent value of 55,000 m³ to 815,000 m³.

The geological layers at sea level and above on the edge mountains, alternating sandstone and marl, belong to the Upper Middle Keuper . The standing water is, except in the valley direction of the Finsteren Rot, surrounded by forest slopes directly or behind a narrow meadow border and is also closely surrounded by farm roads, one runs on the crown of the dam in the southeast. Not far is the Alfdorf hamlet of Hüttenbühl . His next farm is just above the forest edge, which is only about 100 meters wide on the northeast side, at the edge of the open plateau, the other houses are a little further down the river and on the left spur of the valley to the left upper course Black Red the Red after about a kilometer to the red, of which the lower half in close parallel with the other upper course in a common valley.

history

In 1969 the Hagerwald flood retention basin was put into operation. In 2004 it was de-landed (removal of deposited sediment) and in 2010 it was subjected to an in-depth safety inspection according to DIN 19700 .

Protected areas

The Schmerbach runs through a small wet meadow before it flows into the reservoir, the Finstere Rot a little larger. The lake and its surroundings are in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park . In the lake, the landscape protection areas meet to the north and east of Welzheim from the west and Welzheimer Wald and Leintal from the east.

tourism

Immediately below the dam there is a campsite and a restaurant in front of the more distant houses of Hüttenbühl. The lake is not designated as a bathing lake. However, there are two barbecue areas and a play and sunbathing area on the bank. On the north-west bank, a cycle path through the Finstere-Rot-Tal passes the lake, several hiking trails lead past it less than a kilometer away.
