Holger Ziegeler

Holger G. Ziegeler (born June 20, 1961 in Regensburg ) is a German physicist and diplomat and has been consul general in Jeddah / Saudi Arabia since September 2016 .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1980, Ziegeler studied physics , mathematics and general linguistics at the University of Regensburg , the University of Vienna and, as a Fulbright scholar, at Ohio State University in Columbus between 1980 and 1987 . He obtained a Master of Science degree in 1983 and graduated in 1987 with a degree in physics. He is also an alumnus of the German National Academic Foundation . After researching particle physics , he turned to Artificial Intelligence ( neural networks , knowledge engineering , hypertext ) as part of his work for Siemens Austria (1987–1992) .

In 1992 he joined the Foreign Service and after completing his training as an attaché, he became a political public relations officer (abroad) in the Foreign Office in 1993 and then head of the cultural and press department of the embassy in Paraguay from 1994 to 1996 . After returning to Germany, he was deputy head of the IT policy department at the Federal Foreign Office until 1999. Further assignments abroad were then deputy consul general at the consulate general in Miami and from 2003 to 2007 head of the economic department and Djibouti consultant at the embassy in Addis Ababa .

In 2007 he was seconded to the World Bank and IMF Division in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development . There he designed a. a. the German participation in the IFC (Infrastructure Crisis Facility) as an international component of the economic stimulus package II in the economic and financial crisis. In 2009 he moved back to the Federal Foreign Office as deputy head of development policy (among other things as initiator of the federal government's creative power concept).

In 2011, as coordinator of the International Afghanistan Conference in Bonn, he was responsible for the preparation and implementation of the conference.

After a brief assignment to the Federal Academy for Security Policy , Ziegeler headed the Germany Center USA at the Washington Embassy in 2012/13 . The subsequent activity in 2013/14 as a representative for international business and association partnerships as well as B20-Sherpa at the Federal Association of German Industry prepared him for the management of the department for foreign trade policy in countries and regions and the working group for foreign trade advice in the Foreign Office, which he up to took up his post as Consul General at the Consulate General in Jeddah in 2016 (and from 2018 special representative at the Organization for Islamic Cooperation ). In 2020 he was appointed Consul General in Karachi .
