Honda F6C

The F6C is a motorcycle model by Honda that was launched on the German market in January 1997 and was offered until 2004. The F6 stood for "Flat Six", meaning the six-cylinder boxer engine, the "C" stood for "Custom". In the United States, the chopper was marketed under the sales name F6 Valkyrie. The model code is SC34B.

Development history

The F6C was completely redeveloped, only in the engine area was it borrowed from the configuration that has been tried and tested in the luxury tourer Gold Wing GL1500 since 1988. Otherwise, all components and assemblies for the new custom bike were tailor-made.

The guiding principle behind the construction and design were the classic American hot rod cars with their legendary engines (keyword “Big-Block V8”) and the corresponding soundscapes . The engineers found a starting point in the 1,500 cc six-cylinder boxer engine of the Honda Gold Wing . In contrast, the frame and cladding of the F6 C, like the VT 1100 C2 Shadow American Classic Edition, were more based on traditional shapes.

With this visual appearance and its high performance potential, the F6C took on a role as the new flagship of the Honda choppers . While the model in the USA - where it was built - was offered in three different versions, there was only the basic version for the German market, which was not allowed to bear the sonorous name "Valkyrie" here, but only listened to the name F6C. In America there was also the "F6 Valkyrie Tourer" and the "F6 Valkyrie Interstate". While the tourer differed from the basic model only in a high windshield and beautifully painted side cases, the appearance of the Interstate was even more impressive: In addition to a wide front panel with double headlights and a windshield, it also had a large painted topcase with four taillights in the style of one Chevrolet Corvette of the 1960s were housed. The equipment also included a radio and, if desired, even a CB radio . Due to a lack of demand in the USA, the Interstate was closed again in 2001 because it was too close to the target group of the Honda Gold Wing, which was also offered at the same time.

concept

As with the VF750C and the VT1100C Shadow American Classic Edition, the design motto for the F6C is "Long and Low". However, due to its size alone, it develops its very own style. The boxer engine comes into its own, framed by carefully rounded trim and chrome elements. It is optically the focus between its six individual carburettors and just as many exhaust manifolds . The engine sound is partly reminiscent of an older Porsche, which also has a 6-cylinder boxer engine.

The mudguards pulled down a long way, the large tank and the wide saddle-shaped seat bench with a separate pillion passenger part create additional accents, plus many chrome parts, which are typical for a chopper.

The low seat height, the wide, flat handlebars and the forward footrests enable a relaxed and upright sitting position. The overall look is designed to attract attention.

The liquid-cooled six - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 72 kW (98 hp) and a maximum torque of 130 Nm from a displacement of 1520 cm³ . The six cylinders have a bore of 71 mm, a stroke of 64 mm and a compression ratio of 9.8: 1. The pressure circulation lubrication has a wet sump.

The six-cylinder boxer engine of the Gold Wing, on which the engine is based, was to receive an improvement in gas exchange efficiency in order to enable sportier driving. This was achieved through six new 28 mm carburettors and sharper camshafts for more power and torque over the entire speed range. The exhaust manifolds on both sides converge as triplets in large silencers with an implied "tail fin". (6-in-6 exhaust system)

The engine of the F6C uses overhead, toothed belt-controlled camshafts and uncomplicated valve clearance adjustment using a screw and lock nut. This increases the maintenance effort compared to the Goldwing motor, which has hydraulic valve clearance compensation. The electronic ignition system not only provides good response, but also optimal combustion and better power output.

Multi-disc oil bath clutch with hydraulic actuation, five-speed gearbox, cardan drive.

The smooth-running 5-speed gearbox is operated by the F6C driver via a hydraulically operated clutch. The cardan system, which is known for its ease of maintenance, was taken over from the Gold Wing.
