2002 American Honda Motor Co. Inc., issued in the United States four designers commissioned a new motorcycle with the GL-1800 -Motor the Honda Gold Wing design. Four prototypes were created , which were presented to the public in March 2003 at Daytona Beach Bike Week in Daytona Beach .

The Valkyrie rune was produced in the spring of 2003 for the US market in a limited edition of 1500 in the Honda motorcycle factory in Marysville , Ohio from 2004 to 2005. The motorcycle was offered in two different versions in 2004. Buyers could choose between an A version (“exclusive model”) or (at an additional cost) the B version (“deluxe model”). In contrast to the A version, the B version is equipped with a handlebar that is 5 cm closer and 2 cm lower to the driver (Honda designation: "Pullback handlebar") and (in contrast to the silver-painted rims of the A- Version) equipped with completely chrome-plated rims. In 2005 Honda only produced the B version. During the entire production period, the machines were offered in three different colors, which were given the following names by Honda: “Double Clearcoat Black” (DCB), “Illusion Blue” (IB), “Candy Black Cherry” (CBC). In German, this corresponds to the colors black, blue and wine red. Furthermore, a motorcycle in a special edition was made by American Honda for Disneyland . The latter is provided with a gold effect finish and has some design elements such as custom-made rear-view mirror in a characteristic Mickey Mouse - Silhouette and a back reflector at that form. The vehicle was given to Disneyland as a gift on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland and was auctioned for charity. At the ceremonial handover of the vehicle, Arnold Schwarzenegger was present as patron.

A special technical feature is the distinctive front wheel suspension with pulled short swing arm , the rear wheel is suspended from a single swing arm . The power transmission from the engine to the rear wheel takes place through the single-sided swing arm. This is done by means of a drive shaft / cardan shaft , which has a universal joint , works within the closed single-sided swing arm in an oil bath and transmits the drive force to the rear wheel via a bevel gear . This has the advantage that the drive train (compared to other motorcycles with chain drives ) has longer maintenance intervals and is also more fail-safe. The Gold Wing engine was revised for the Valkyrie Rune, received different camshafts , an improved injection system and an optimized ignition system. The lash , however, must be different from the Gold Wing can be set manually. As a further special feature, the vehicle is equipped with an electronic immobilizer with transponder locking and an electrically operated steering column lock. Speed , fuel level , total kilometers (ODO, English: odometer ), as well as the daily kilometers (switchable between Trip 1 and Trip 2) can be read on a multifunction display, which consists of an LC display produced using digital technology . This is recessed on the top of the fuel tank (capacity: 23 liters, of which 4.3 liters reserve) and does not require any mechanical components to function. The LC display changes the color of the display fully automatically depending on the brightness detected by a sensor . In daylight this function creates a light background with black digits on the display, in darkness a blue background with white digits. This is accomplished by switching the LEDs used for the background lighting of the LC display . In this way, among other things, a good reading option is always guaranteed even in rapidly changing light conditions (tunnel passages).

In order to underline the exclusivity and high quality of the motorcycle, every customer who bought a new Honda rune received a coffee table book with a sheet steel cover from the manufacturer . This cover is painted in the color of the motorcycle purchased and provided with the original tank emblem , also adapted to the color of the vehicle - coated under several layers of clear varnish . The book was presented in all three color variants in a sturdy protective cover made of real, black, hand-sewn leather . Together with the book, all buyers received two CDs , one with “Press Information” (the history of the motorcycle's origins), another with a “Service Manual” ( workshop manual ), an “Owner's Manual” (driver 's manual ) (as PDF files ) and a commercial called "Rune Television Commercial". In addition to the items mentioned, each buyer received a hand-signed letter from Vice President of American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Ray Blank, as a thank you for purchasing the vehicle.

Officially, only 20 of these machines came onto the European market.
