Hoppingen is a parish village and part of the city of Harburg (Swabia) in the district of Donau-Ries in the administrative district of Swabia in Bavaria .

Hoppingen is located northwest of Harburg in Nördlinger Ries, just southwest of the crater rim. To the northeast, the place is surrounded by the northwest-southeast running Wörnitz , which flows along the crater rim. At Hoppingen, the Kohlenbach flows into the Wörnitz.

The noble family of the Knights of Hoppingen had their seat in Hoppingen . They were ministerials of the Counts of Oettingen . They were first mentioned in 1240 and became extinct in 1497. In 1396 they are mentioned as lords of the Thurneck Castle near Thurneck near Mönchsdeggingen . From 1406 to 1496 they were owned by Wellwart Castle near Brünsee .

Hoppingen was an independent municipality in the Nördlingen district . As part of the regional reform in Bavaria , Hoppingen was added to the district of Nördlingen-Donauwörth on July 1, 1972, which has been called the Donau-Ries district since May 1, 1973 , and incorporated into the city of Harburg (Swabia) on January 1, 1974.

The Catholic parish of Motherhood of Mary belongs to the Nördlingen deanery in the Augsburg diocese . The parish also includes the subsidiary church of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Möttingen and the villages of Bühl im Ries , Heroldingen , Großsorheim and Wörnitzostheim .
The Protestants from Hoppingen belong to the Protestant parish Sankt Martin in Heroldingen .

Hoppingen has its own train station on the Riesbahn from Aalen to Donauwörth .
South of Hoppingen, federal highway 25 runs from Nördlingen to Donauwörth , which at this point belongs to the Romantic Road . The state road St 2221 from Oettingen in Bavaria leads through Hoppingen and on to Möttingen .
