geography

Hoyvík forms the northern part of the Tórshavn agglomeration and lies in the east towards the open Atlantic. To the east of Hoyvík is the 0.8 hectare small, uninhabited Hoyvíkshólmur , one of the eleven spars of the Faroe Islands . A small lighthouse was built here in 1939 and it still stands today.

Across the stile you can enjoy the view over Nólsoyarfjørður with the island of Nólsoy in the east. To the northeast you can see the island of Eysturoy to which an undersea tunnel is planned.

To the south is the Hoydalar valley with the Faroe Islands grammar school ( see there ). The valley forms the border with Tórshavn.

history

Hoyvík 1839

In 1584 they started to keep land registers in the Faroe Islands. At that time there were two royal farms (leased by the Danish king) in Hoyvík. In 1600 they were merged into one courtyard. In 1802 the Hoyvíksgarður was again divided into two equal parts. One of the tenants was the governor ( fúti ) from Tórshavn. The other half of the farm remained with the same family, who have been running it from 1600 until today.

In 1920 the bailiff's yard was converted into an agricultural research station. In 1982 it was moved to Kollafjørður and the farm became the open-air museum of the Faroese National Museum , which is located here.

Hoyvík was incorporated into Tórshavn in 1978 and has grown tremendously since then, as living space in the capital became increasingly scarce. The buildings are mostly single-family and row houses. Characteristic for the row house chains is their individual color according to the taste of the respective family. Due to the forecast population growth of the capital, further (relatively inexpensive) building land is being developed here. Urban planning stipulates that 40% single-family houses, 40% terraced houses and 20% residential houses with a maximum of five floors will be built here.

On August 31, 2005 the treaty between the Faroe Islands and Iceland on the common economic zone was signed here, see Hoyvíker Agreement .

The foundation stone for the modern Hoyvík Church was laid in June 2005 by Queen Margrethe II. On November 4, 2007, it was consecrated by Bishop Hans Jacob Joensen in the presence of around 1,000 visitors . It is the first new church in the country since the Folk Church of the Faroe Islands became independent.

It is planned that Løgmaður , the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, will have his official residence in Hoyvík in the future.
