Hudson River Region AVA (recognized July 6, 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of New York . The area is in the Columbia County administrative area and borders the counties of Rensselaer County , Greene County and Ulster County .

Despite the extensive definition of the growing area, the vineyards are rarely more than 3 km from the Hudson River . They occupy slopes to the west of the river, which flows south from the north. With this orientation of the location, the vineyards can be warmed up by the morning sun. Sea breezes that get through the Hudson valley to the wine-growing region cool the climate in summer, but help the vineyards to have more favorable conditions in winter than in the surrounding area.

With the winery Brotherhood Winery , founded in 1839, the area has the oldest still in operation in North America Good.

The overall cool wine-growing climate affects the choice of grape varieties . In addition to very hardy hybrid vines , there is also an increasing choice of early-ripening European noble vines.
