Hugo von Rümelin

Gustav Friedrich Hugo Rümelin , later von Rümelin , (born August 2, 1851 in Heilbronn ; † June 13, 1932 there ) was a German banker . He was co-owner and managing director of the Heilbronn bank Rümelin & Co. and from 1908 to 1929 president of the Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce . From 1883 to 1919 he was a member of the citizens' committee and the municipal council in Heilbronn, and from 1913 to 1918 he was a representative of trade and industry in the Württemberg Chamber of Class Lords .

Rümelin was the son of the Heilbronn banker Richard Rümelin (1818–1880) and his wife Christiane “Nanette” Auguste Johanna Cloß (1819–1902). He had nine siblings, four of whom died early. Both his father and mother came from influential families. Richard Rümelin founded the Heilbronn bank Rümelin & Co. together with his brother Max (1823-1893) in 1856 and was chairman of the Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce from 1859 to 1871 . Another brother of his father, Gustav von Rümelin , was a member of parliament, minister and chancellor of the University of Tübingen. His mother was the daughter of the wealthy Winnend merchant Johann Friedrich Cloß, her brother Friedrich Cloß was an important Heilbronn merchant, her sister Johanna was the mother of the later Mayor of Heilbronn, Paul Hegelmaier .

After attending grammar school in Heilbronn , Hugo Rümelin did an apprenticeship in his father's bank from 1869 to 1872 and then worked for major banks in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main until 1875 . In 1875/76 he attended lectures at Berlin University and then returned to Heilbronn, where he joined the Rümelin & Co. bank as a personally liable partner in 1876 . After the death of his father in 1880 and his brother Ernst in 1883, he became the owner and managing director of the bank alongside his brother Richard (1855–1923), which was converted into Rümelin-Bank AG in 1922, of which he was chairman of the supervisory board from that year. After Rümelin-Bank AG merged with Württembergische Vereinsbank at the end of 1924 and was taken over by Deutsche Bank , which continued to run it as its Heilbronn branch, Hugo von Rümelin became deputy chairman of the Württemberg regional committee of Deutsche Bank and Disconto-Gesellschaft in 1925. He was also a member of the Stuttgart District Committee of the Reichsbank .

Rümelin was a member of a large number of corporate bodies. He was chairman of the Heilbronner Wohnungsvereins AG, from 1912 chairman of the supervisory board of Salzwerk Heilbronn AG , member and chairman of the supervisory board of the Böblingen sugar factory and member of the supervisory board of Süddeutsche Zucker-AG , the mechanical engineering company Heilbronn , the Württemberg Portland cement works in Lauffen a. N. and CH Knorr AG . He was also a member of the advisory board of the Royal Central Office for Trade and Commerce in Stuttgart .

From 1908 to 1929 Rümelin was President and from 1929 Honorary Chairman of the Heilbronn Chamber of Commerce . As a member and president of the chamber, he campaigned in particular for the consolidation of the German railways, for the construction of the Neckar Canal , for business lessons and further education through lectures.

Political offices

In 1883 Rümelin, who was a member of the national liberal DP, was elected to the Heilbronn Citizens Committee. Until 1919 he belonged first to the citizens' committee, then to the Heilbronn municipal council . At the suggestion of the Württemberg Industry and Trade Congress, King Wilhelm II appointed Rümelin to succeed the late Albert von Melchior as a representative of trade and industry in the Württemberg Chamber of Notaries . He entered the Chamber on May 23, 1913 and was a member of it until the end of 1918.

family

In 1879 Rümelin married Ottilie Franziska Karoline Luise Sofie Reibel (1857–1941), the daughter of the Heilbronn merchant Karl Reibel . The children Georg Rümelin (1880–1969), Richard Rümelin jun. (1883–1964) and Elisabeth Rümelin (1889–1941). From 1895 the family lived in the newly built Villa Rümelin in Heilbronn.

Awards

Rümelin received the campaign medal 1870/71, the Order of the Württemberg Crown , with which the personal nobility was connected, and the Knight's Cross of the Frederick Order . In 1900 he was given the title of Kommerzienrat , followed in 1914 by the title of Secret Commerce Councilor.

Hugo-Rümelin-Strasse has existed in Heilbronn since February 9, 1922 . It was created by renaming the Rümelinstraße, which was named in 1921 .
