Hugo Robertowitsch Salemann ( Russian Гуго Робертович Залеман ; born June 7, 1859 in Saint Petersburg , † 1919 in Petrograd ) was a Russian sculptor and university professor .

Life

Salemann, son of the sculptor Robert Salemann , attended the Petri School from 1870–1877 and then studied at the Academy of Arts . In 1883 he won the small gold medal for his statue of Orestes on the run from the Erinyes and in 1884 the large gold medal for his bas-relief of the battle of the titans and the Olympians . The gold medal was linked to a four-year scholarship from the Akademie der Künste, with which he traveled to Dresden and Munich in 1885 and then mainly worked in Florence and Rome .

After his return to St. Petersburg in 1889 Salemann became an adjunct professor for anatomy lessons at the Academy of Arts. He caused a sensation with his group of sculptures of the Cimbri , which was shown at the exhibition of the Academy of Arts in 1890 and is now in the Russian Museum . Salemann now received many commissions, especially for the sculptural decoration of public buildings. For the portico of the Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow (now the Pushkin Museum ), he created a large frieze depicting the Olympic Games . He also created monumental sculptures, such as the statue of the Baptist of Rus Vladimir I for the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev .

In 1894 Salemann was appointed full professor. In 1896 he was elected a real member of the Academy of Arts. He taught until the October Revolution . His students included Matwei Genrichowitsch Maniser , Boris Iwanowitsch Jakowlew , Viktor Alexandrowitsch Sinaiski , Igor Wsevolodowitsch Krestowski , Alexander Nikolajewitsch Samochwalow , Juozas Zikaras and Kārlis Zāle , who created the Freedom Monument in Riga .

Salemann was buried in the Lutheran part of the Wolkowo cemetery next to his father's grave. In 1922 an exhibition of Salemann's works was held in the Academy of the Arts.
