Hugo Suter

Hugo Suter (born August 12, 1943 in Aarau ; † August 16, 2013 ) was a Swiss artist .

Suter grew up in Gränichen . Between 1959 and 1963 he completed an apprenticeship as a gravure retoucher in Zofingen and from 1964 to 1966 he was a drawing teacher at the Zurich School of Applied Arts . In 1966 and 1967 he did an internship in the studio of the sculptor Bernhard Luginbühl in Mötschwil and from 1968 he joined the Ziegelrain studio community in Aarau. Between 1968 and 1982 he was a part-time drawing teacher at the Buchs district school. From 1982 to 1986 he was teaching figurative drawing at the ETH Zurich . From 1982 to 1988 he had a studio in Beinwil am See and between 1988 and 1993 in Seon .

From 1993 until his death Hugo Suter lived and worked in Birrwil .

Suter dealt with painting, drawing, photography, object art and installations. Glass was one of his favorite picture carriers. Hugo Suter dealt intensively with the connections between artistic design and scientific research. Suter's work is characterized by thematic groups of works, each focusing on a specific question that preoccupied the artist for a long time. There are always connections between these individual thematic blocks, but at the same time there are also individual works that are outside this context.

His main work includes the 65-part paravent (1978–1995 / 2002) made of window sashes placed in the room like a fence with changing surface appearances of the Hallwilersee .
