Huxley is a city in Shelby County , East Texas . It is located on the eastern district boundary on the edge of the Toledo Bend Reservoir . The town was founded at the end of the 19th century , and it was constituted as an independent city ( City ) in 1969. description

Huxley is on the eastern edge of Shelby County on a bulge of the Toledo Bend Reservoir. It is surrounded by the Sabine National Forest . The surrounding landscape is flat to slightly undulating and is characterized by forest and intervening cultivation areas and pastures . The main connecting road is Farm-to-Market Road 2694 . The city itself consists of individual properties without a fixed town center . The small area is due to the fact that the urban area only includes streets and the adjacent properties . The distance to the district capital Center is 22.5 kilometers, and that of San Augustine , the capital of San Augustine County , which is south of the district , is around 30 kilometers.

According to the Handbook for Texas Online , Huxley was founded around 1890. A post office was in operation until 1905 ; In 1938 the community had a school with around 100 students. In 1945 the population had dropped to around 50. Huxley was able to compensate for the disadvantages associated with the decline of agriculture due to the proximity to the newly built Toledo Bend Reservoir. It was constituted as a city in 1969. The occasion was the attempt by local chicken farmers to circumvent the high energy supply prices . One aspect of this project was a narrow urban area that was reduced to streets and residents. In 1970 Huxley had 302 residents. At the turn of the millennium, it dropped below the 300 mark and rose to over 400 in the 2010s. Huxley now also includes a number of small neighboring locations such as Paul's Store. As an adjacent location to the Toledo Bend Reservoir, the city also maintains a small marina .

The school supply of Huxley is taken over by the two Independent School Districts Shelbyville and Joaquin.
