description

Tenaha is located in northern Shelby County at the intersection of US Federal Highways 84, 59 and 96, about two miles from the Panola County line . Like the two neighboring cities of Timpson (west) and Joaquin (east), Tenaha is part of a chain of towns along US Highway 84 . The distance to the district capital Center is around 16 kilometers, the distance to the district capital of the neighboring county to the north ( Carthage ) and the Toledo Bend Reservoir , which marks the state border with Louisiana , is around 25 kilometers each. The surrounding landscape is flat to slightly wavy and is characterized throughout by forest and in between cultivation areas and pastures .

Tenaha was first mentioned as a settlement for Anglo-American settlers at the time of the regulator-moderator Wars in the 1840s - a feud between vigilante groups at war with one another . The place name refers to a general name of the region in the early pioneer era - Tenaha Municipally. The official foundation of the town is dated to the year 1886. Initially just a railway station on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway operated connection between Houston and Shreveport , a small-town infrastructure soon developed with a post office , shops and three churches . In 1980 the place had around 200 inhabitants, in 1896 already 680. The economic focus was the onward transport of agricultural and forestry products - especially wood . In the 1950s, several wood processing companies and a canned tomato factory were present in the city. The population in 1988 was 1,073 people. As a replacement for the sharply declining wood industry, the place distinguished itself as a nearby tourism infrastructure location to the nearby Toledo Bend Reservoir.

In the 2000s, the Tenaha Sheriff Department hit the headlines nationwide. The occasion was a series of monetary and property confiscations between 2006 and 2008, which were carried out under the pretext of confiscating drug money . Here, mainly African-American and Hispanic travelers were subjected to a check and were given the option of either agreeing to the seizure of cash or other valuables or to accept arrest on suspicion of drug trafficking. The money confiscated from these actions went into the coffers of the local police. A class action brought by those affected ended in a settlement, in the course of which a large number of the confiscated valuables were returned to their owners. The incident also resulted in the dismissal of a number of officers involved. Elora Mukherjee, an attorney for the Racial Justice Program of the civil rights organization ACLU , characterized some of the incidents as "the worst form of racially motivated property confiscation we have seen in the whole country."
