Timpson is a city in Shelby County , East Texas . It was founded in 1897 as a train station and was a prosperous transport center within the region in the first half of the 20th century . In the decades after the middle of the century, the population declined; However, the population increased again in the 2010s and was estimated at 1,338 inhabitants in 2017.

Timpson is in the northwest corner of Shelby County at the intersection of US Federal Highways 87, 84, and 59 . The distance to the district boundary to neighboring Panola County is around 8 kilometers, that to the county capital Center is around 25 kilometers and that to Carthage , the county seat of Panola County, around 35 kilometers. The landscape of the area is flat to slightly wavy and consistently characterized by forest and intervening cultivation areas and pastures .

Timpson was founded in the course of the construction of the Houston East and West Texas Railroad - a rail link that connected the eastern Texas metropolis of Houston with Shreveport in Louisiana . The city was named after the railway engineer. PB Timpson. After being connected to the railway network, the city developed rapidly. 1906 had in Timpson, among others, a factory production of Axtgriffen , one for the production of mineral water , one for the packaging of tomato and the preservation of peaches , two banks and a hotel situated. At the turn of the century, Timpson was the most important transport hub in the region. In 1910 the population was 1528. In 1925 Timpson advanced to become a center for lignite transportation. An economic slump set in in the 1930s - with corresponding consequences for the number of residents (see section “Demography”).

The Timpson Independent School District covers the northeast corner of Shelby County beyond the city area. An elementary school (grades PK4–5), a middle school (grades 6–8) and a high school (grades 9–12) are available. All three are on the outskirts of downtown on McLoughlin Street.

Timpson has several historic buildings dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. In addition to the town square in the center, there are three churches: the First Baptist Church of Timpson , the Tennessee Presbyterian Church, and the Tennessee Methodist Church .

Demographics

The inhabitants number of Timpson has, stabilized to a plateau about 1,500 in the first half of the 20th century at a level above 1000 - and the trend is upward and again the brand has exceeded 1,500 during the 2010s-years. Nine respondents (0.5%) described themselves as belonging to two or more ethnic groups.

According to Quickfacts information on census.gov , the median income per household in 2017 was 28,125 US dollars (USD). The median value determined is below that of the three comparison units Texas (USD 54,700), USA (USD 55,300) and Shelby County (USD 36,300). The census showed 39.8% of people living in poverty and 33.3% of people without health insurance .
