Joaquin is a city in Shelby County , East Texas . It was founded in 1885 as a railway station , is located in the northeast corner of the district and was at times an important loading station for timber and cotton . According to the US census , the population was 957 in 2016.

Joaquin is located in the northeast corner of Shelby County - not far from the influence of the Sabine River into the Toledo Bend Reservoir . The distance to Logansport , located in Louisiana and accessible via a bridge, is around 3 kilometers, the rum Toledo Bend Reservoir 12 to 15 kilometers and that to the Sabine National Forest 8 to 10 kilometers. The district capital Center is around 25 kilometers away. The surrounding landscape is flat to slightly wavy and is characterized by forest and intervening cultivation areas and pastures . Most important national compounds of US Highway 84 and one from the Union Pacific runs and driven from west to east through the northern part of Shelby County railway .

Joaquin was founded in 1885 as a train stop for the Houston, East and West Texas Railway . Benjamin Franklin Morris, a veteran of the Confederate Army and one of the main landowners in the area, had given the railroad 100 acres of land on condition that a train station would be built on the site. The place around the station was named after Morris' grandson Joaquin. In 1890 he had a post office , several shops and an estimated population of 100. The place prospered and secured city rights as a city in the course of the 1920s . In the second half of the 20th century went agriculture back in the region. The construction of the Toledo Bend Reservoir offered a way out of the economic doldrums - a major project that was completed in 1966 and enabled economic reorientation towards tourism in the following decades .

The Joaquin Independent School District is one of the six school districts in Shelby County. Beyond the immediate city area, it covers the area up to the northern end of the Toledo Bend Reservoir and the city of Huxley on its west bank . The old station building BF Morris and Town of Joaquin and the Fellowship Baptist Church are shown as historical markers .

Demographics

The US census for 2016 showed a total population in that year of 957 people. 499 of them were male , 458 female . 681 inhabitants were 18 years of age or older, 276 children or adolescents , 126 older than 65 years. The median age was 36.7 years. 652 of the respondents described themselves as white (68.1%), 227 as African-American (23.7%) and 25 as American with Indian roots or other natives (2.6%). None of the respondents stated two or more ethnicities. Regardless of the question about the census declaration Race , 53 residents described themselves as Hispanic or Latino (5.5%). According to Quickfacts information on census.gov , the median income per household in 2017 was 35,750 US dollars (USD). The determined median household income is below that of the two comparison units Texas (USD 54,700) and the USA as a whole (USD 55,300). The one in Shelby County's total ($ 36,300) comes pretty close to it. The census showed 25.1% of people living in poverty and 22% of people without health insurance .
