IC 4742 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Peacock in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 194 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 100,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies IC 4730 , IC 4744 , IC 4748 , IC 4749 .
The object was discovered by DeLisle Stewart on July 20, 1901 .
