Ihlow is a district in the municipality of Oberbarnim in the Brandenburg district of Märkisch-Oderland . The village, first mentioned in a document in the 14th century, is located on the southeastern part of Barnim in the Märkische Schweiz nature park . It is administered by the Office of Märkische Schweiz .

Etymology and history

The village is mentioned around 1320 in connection with Tylo de Hylowe . The first documentary mention of a place called Ihlow was in a land book by Charles IV in 1375. The name comes from the Slavic language and roughly means "dwelling on boggy ground" or "place where there is white loam, clay". Since 1375 the place was the knight seat of von Ihlow and von Eichendorff . They owned two yards with 14 and 11 hooves and two yards with 12 and 17 hooves. A village schoolmaster Baltasar Barth is known from 1658 ; 1698 a tailor and schoolmaster Jürgen Christoph Bartz . A forge of the Wiese family must have existed in the village since 1721 . In 1740 the property was transferred to the von Bredow family . Ihlow Castle was built in the first half of the 18th century. It was significantly rebuilt after 1900.

In 1946 the farmers were expropriated. 429.5  hectares will be redistributed. 27 farm workers and previously landless farmers received a total of 307 hectares, 16.5 hectares went to poor farmers and a further 106 hectares to resettlers and the community. In 1953 the first agricultural production cooperative dissolved. A year later, a new company was founded with nine members who jointly cultivate 32 hectares. During the GDR era , the castle was used as a kindergarten, restaurant and as a HO grocery store.

After the fall of the Wall , an organic farm was founded in 1996. Attempts to use the castle as a seminar venue were unsuccessful. In 2000 the village received the award "Nature Park Community in Märkische Schweiz". The incorporation to Oberbarnim took place in 2003.
