The Nature Park Märkische Switzerland with an area of 205 sq km, the smallest large protected area in the country Brandenburg . The southern part of Märkische Schweiz around Buckow was established as a large conservation area on December 1, 1990 with the GDR national park program , making it the oldest nature park in Brandenburg. Location and transport links

The nature park is located approx. 60 km east of Berlin in the Märkisch-Oderland district in the east of the state of Brandenburg .

The nature park can be reached by train via the Berlin-Lichtenberg - Küstrin ( Ostbahn ) regional train via Müncheberg (Mark) station. From here, the Buckower Kleinbahn , which operates as a museum railway on weekends, branches off to Buckow.

The federal highways 1 and 5 touch the nature park in its southern part.

The landscape in Märkische Schweiz is shaped by the Ice Age. The heights are terminal moraines . In the post-ice age, meltwater channels, lakes, moors and pools formed. The Schermützelsee lies in the center of the nature park . The central flowing water of the nature park is the Stobber . The brook has its source on the North Sea-Baltic Sea divide . Its apex area with a pseudobifurcation is 48  m above sea level. NN in the Rotes Luch moorland . The 25 kilometer long stream flows from the Roten Luch through Buckow to the Oderbruch . At Altfriedland it unites with the Quappendorfer Canal to form the Friedländer Strom , whose water is fed to the Baltic Sea via the Alte Oder , the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler Wasserstraße and the Oder in the Stettiner Haff .

Protected areas

The Großschutzgebiet (GSG) Nature Park Märkische Schweiz was legally designated as Nature Park Märkische Schweiz on October 1st, 1990 with the ordinance on the establishment of nature reserves and a landscape protection area of ​​central importance and covers an area of ​​205 km².

The entire nature park (100%) is designated as a landscape protection area (LSG). In addition, there are six nature reserves in the nature reserve (NSG) with a total area of ​​19 km² (9%), including the central 884  hectare nature reserve Stobbertal , which accompanies the Stobber over a length of around 13 kilometers. The nature reserve is also designated as an FFH area , including with regard to the small river mussel as an FFH species that is particularly worthy of protection according to Appendix II . 87.1% of the nature park area is also designated as a European bird sanctuary (SPA), including the European bird sanctuary Altfriedland pond and lake area around the Kietzer See in the northeast corner of the nature park. A further 14 fauna and flora habitats (FFH) are also located in the nature park.

The European cycle route R1 leads through the nature park. Today visitors can hike through “Märkische Schweiz” on the 150 kilometers of hiking trails. The "Poetenstieg", which starts in Buckow and leads through the mixed forests and the Silberkehle gorge, is a delightful hiking trail. Well-known poets and writers such as Theodor Fontane , Bertolt Brecht and others were present here. A cultural and historical attraction is the former Cistercian - Kloster Friedland and his monastery church and the Klostersee .
