The Ilm-Rennsteig-Radweg is an approximately 20 km long regional bike path along the disused railway line Ilmenau – Großbreitenbach in the southern part of the Ilm district in Thuringia. The cycle path begins in Ilmenau and leads via Langewiesen and Gehren to the Hohe Tanne near Großbreitenbach . From there the path leads alternatively to Großbreitenbach or to Neustadt am Rennsteig, where there is a connection to the Rennsteig cycle path. From the outskirts of Ilmenau to Großbreitenbach, the cycle path is almost completely designated as a cycle route .

Route profile

The route of the cycle path is almost identical to that of the former embankment of the railway line to Großbreitenbach over almost its entire length. Between Gehren and Hohe Tanne, the cycle path has an average gradient of 3.3 percent. It is paved almost on its entire length to Großbreitenbach. Only the route to Neustadt am Rennsteig, which can be selected from the Hohe Tanne as an alternative to the route to Großbreitenbach, is graveled to the entrance to Neustadt am Rennsteig.

Route

Route from Ilmenau to the Hohe Tanne

The Ilm-Rennsteig cycle path near Möhrenbach

Route length: 15.4 km

The cycle path begins in Ilmenau approximately at the level of the ice rink ( 478  m above sea  level ) and runs in an easterly direction in the Ilm valley through the city area. After leaving Ilmenau, the cycle path runs from Grenzhammer , where there was a stop on the former railway line, to the recycling center in Langewiesen on a distance of around one kilometer past the Ilm-Auwald biotope, which is a designated area natural monument . The course of the cycle path from its starting point in Ilmenau to Langewiesen is identical to that of the Ilmtal cycle path, which branches off in the Langewiesen city area and continues to follow the course of the Ilm. After the bike path Langewiesen has left behind, it is from the main road crossed L2646 and then crosses under the federal highway 88 and the Ilmtalbrücke the railway new Ebensfeld-Erfurt . After leaving the Ilm valley, the cycle path in the town center of Gehren leads over public roads past the town church and the castle park and, after driving through the castle avenue at the exit of Gehren, reaches the embankment again. The cycle path then leads to the disused railway stop in the Möhrenbach district of Gehren to the west of the Lange Berg and on to the also disused Neustadt-Gillersdorf an der Hohen Tanne train station ( 700  m above sea level ). Here you have the option of either keeping the embankment route to Großbreitenbach or choosing the route to Neustadt am Rennsteig, which has been newly created on forest paths.

Route length: 2.5 km

After Neustadt-Gillersdorf train station, the cycle path leaves the former railway embankment for a short distance and crosses the Hohe Tanne industrial park, which was developed from 2011 to 2013. In the following course the bike path is led over a distance of approx. 200 m over a gravel forest path and then reaches the embankment again. The cycle path ends in Großbreitenbach ( 663  m above sea level ) in the immediate vicinity of the outdoor pool.

Route length: 4.8 km

At the former Neustadt-Gillersdorf an der Hohen Tanne train station, there is the option of using an alternative route leading from there to Neustadt am Rennsteig to reach the Rennsteig cycle path. This route mostly runs on gravel forest paths past the quarry of the SST Steinindustrie Schwarza am Rotkopf and on to the Höllteich , which is fed by the Höllbach , a source river of the Wohlrose . The route then leads around the northern slope of the Edelmannskopf ( 816  m above sea level ) to the Rosensbank , before reaching 785  m above sea level. NHN reached the highest point in Neustadt am Rennsteig. In the municipality of Neustadt am Rennsteig, the route runs up to the connection to the Rennsteig cycle path , where it reaches its destination, via the L1143 state road.

history

After the railway line from Ilmenau to Großbreitenbach was shut down in 1998 and redesigned in 2008, construction of the cycle path started in early July 2011 under the leadership of the then administrative association Langer Berg . 90% of the project was financed with state funds. The opening of the first section took place at the beginning of April 2012 in Ilmenau. On August 17, 2012, the second section to Langwiesen was released, in October 2012 the opening of the third section, which ended at the Möhrenbach stop. The finished cycle path was opened to the public with the release of the last section on October 25, 2013. The construction of the cycle path created a connection between the two national routes, the Ilmtal cycle path and the Rennsteig cycle path.
