Forsaken out of love is a German romantic drama by Oliver Dommenget from 2006. The film is part of a ZDF film series that goes by the title Im Tal der Wild Rosen and focuses on women who were pioneers in the 19th century. Century ventured into new territory and built a new life against all odds. It is the second film in the series with the leading roles starring Sonsee Neu and Hardy Krüger junior as well as Gerlinde Locker , Stefan Gubser , Anne Brendler , Andreas Brucker , Sylvia Leifheit and Kim-Sarah Brandts .

In the opening credits to the film, Gerlinde Locker speaks the following text to introduce the story: “The valley of wild roses. Our valley, our world, in which we lived and worked as settlers. We looked after our animals, tilled our fields, drove herds of cattle across the country and prepared for the harsh winters. It was not an easy life and yet the women in the valley knew what it means to love and how high the price is that you sometimes have to pay for it. "

action

With reference to the opening credits, it says at the beginning of the film: “So does Dr. Grace Scott, a respected and respected doctor. Grace couldn't think of any place in the world she'd rather live unless it was by the ocean. But more on that later. Grace only knew her job and was a woman with a heart. Life in our city went on smoothly and the stagecoach stopped in front of the hotel as always. As different as the people in our valley were, as different are their ways of life. So unpredictable and full of twists and turns. Had Grace been told on the morning of that day that her heart was going to be put to one of the toughest tests love can bring, she would probably have laughed out loud; but that's exactly what happened on this beautiful summer day. "

The young doctor Grace Scott is on her way back to her practice with her team of horses when she comes across a man in the middle of the wilderness who is injured and unconscious. Grace takes him to her practice, which is often used as a small hospital. During Grace's treatment, the stranger stutters the name Christopher. When the doctor discovers a children's toy in his pocket, there is a fear that he had a child with him. Grace's brother William Scott and his friend Henry Miller immediately set off to look for the boy. When Jeremy Bernett, that's the name of the stranger, overhears that the men have little hope of finding Christopher in time, he dresses and rides off alone to look for his three-year-old son. Grace follows him after her niece Melly informs her. And indeed they find the little one who is unharmed. Jeremy Bernett is the small town's new teacher, a former Boston university professor . Jeremy evades the question about Christopher's mother.

Subtext: “Grace still thought she was safe, convinced that her reason was up to the onslaught of her feelings. But soon she should find out that the head does not rule the heart. ”Since Jeremy's accommodation is still in a very poor condition, he stays with Grace and her brother for the time being and brings the little wooden house back into a habitable one for himself and his son Status. When Grace brings him food, the two of them kiss for the first time. When Grace asks about his family, Jeremy tells her that his mother has left him. He was just nine years old at the time and his father had died shortly before. He would never forget that moment when he woke up and she was no longer there. Only through his son did he learn to love again.

When Grace asks Jeremy to ride by Betty, a woman who has lived alone in the lonely forest for 25 years and from whom she gets tinctures, it becomes clear that Betty is the woman who left Jeremy at the time. But Betty is also the woman who is respected and adored by everyone in the valley, especially Grace. And then a carriage pulls up from which Caroline Bernett, Jeremy's wife, gets out. She left her husband and child a year ago without a word. Jeremy Grace assures that she is a woman who has no heart and that he is very afraid of losing his child.

Grace learns from Betty that Jeremy is actually Michael and is her son, and that she is a different person today. She fears that her son will never be able to forgive her. Subtext: “It is claimed that there is no such thing as the one big decision that determines the course of a whole life, but that it is always the sum of the many small events, but why is it that a single wrong decision can be enough? to make all other correct ones impossible. And why is it always this one who is so, so unchangeable, so final. ”Grace finds a very tender letter from Jeremy on the doorstep, which ends with the words that he will always love only her.

During the night Jeremy knocks on Grace's door, sent by Caroline who is concerned about any strange marks she has. Grace, shaking her head, says she has nothing but small flea bites. Little Christopher, however, is seriously ill without his mother seeming to have noticed. Grace takes him into her care. For Jeremy, the situation becomes more and more difficult when he is advised to quit on his own initiative. Betty, however, advises Grace to ignore all moral ideas that it is her life and that she should live her love.

The situation changes suddenly when Bruce Franklin, Caroline Bernett's lover, appears in the valley to convince Caroline to go with him, since he has now got too much money again and can offer her a luxurious life. And again Caroline disappears without leaving a message. A little later, Grace is called to an accident. Bruce Franklin is dead and Caroline is badly injured. In her last words to Jeremy, she asks his forgiveness for her selfishness. You couldn't have done otherwise.

“Grace's big dream came true to see the ocean - the Pacific . Grace and Jeremy stayed as happy on their return as they were on the first day. Margret and Henry had four more children, and Grace practiced until old age. Little Christopher became the first governor of our state. But this is another story."

Production notes, publication

The film was produced by Videoscope Fernseh-Film GmbH. The shooting took place in the wider area of Calgary in the province of Alberta (partly as far as the Rocky Mountains ) in Canada . Claus Beling , who also came up with the idea for the series, was the responsible director at ZDF . At the center of the series are young settler women who at the beginning of the 20th century had to face a real struggle for existence in order to support their families during the development of the west. Beling wanted to see this time illuminated from a different perspective. It was not easy to get a production on Canadian soil, but they didn't want a Canadian co-producer because they feared that he would "have brought a completely different perspective to the stories". “We attach great importance to being the master of our own house,” Beling clarified. It was also possible to keep production "even without foreign participation" in the "relatively normal cost range", "which does not fall exorbitantly out of line".

The film was first broadcast by ZDF on February 12, 2006 as part of the “Great ZDF Sunday Film”. In France it was published on February 27, 2007, in Italy on June 21, 2009.

The first three films in the series were released on DVD on December 4, 2006, published by Universum Film GmbH.

criticism

Kino.de commented on the first three films: “Three melodramatic stories from the great wide world of Canadian nature. Barbara Engelke's great Canada stories about strong women were filmed lavishly. Great landscape shots in the midst of untouched nature make it easy to see over one or the other story weakness. Shallow entertainment, great melodrama and the above all unrealizable love set the tone in these ZDF films. "

TV Spielfilm gave one of three possible points for action and tension, pointed with the thumb to the right and wrote: "Another film from the series about the hard (emotional) life of the settler women in the 19th century", and then with little respect determine: "You know one of them, you know all ..."

Prisma stated succinctly: "Great feelings in a wide land."
