Indium trimethyl is a chemical compound from the group of organometallic compounds .

Extraction and presentation

Indium trimethyl can be produced by the Grignard reaction of indium and magnesium with bromomethane

or by the metathesis reaction of indium (III) chloride or indium (III) bromide with methyllithium .

It can also be produced by a transmetallation reaction of metallic indium and mercury dimethyl at 135 ° C.

properties

Indium trimethyl is a white pyrophoric solid. It consists of monomeric molecules in the gas state and in solution ( benzene , cyclopentane ), but is tetrameric in the solid state. The molecule has a trigonal-planar structure. The compound is relatively inert. A violent reaction occurs with air and cold water. With acids , rapid hydrolysis takes place with evolution of methane . It is soluble in ether, petroleum ether, cyclohexane , benzene and methylene chloride ; it reacts with alcohols . Adducts are formed with electron donors such as trialkylamines.

use

Indium trimethyl is used to make indium phosphide . In semiconductor production it is used as a doping reagent or to produce III / V semiconductor layers.
