Institute for Textual Criticism

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for Text Criticism ( ITK ) is a non-profit association for the promotion of editorial initiatives and the development of new edition models based in Heidelberg . In addition to established edition projects such as the historical-critical edition of the works of Franz Kafka (FKA), Gottfried Kellers (HKKA), Johann Peter Hebels and the Brandenburger Kleist edition (BKA), the ITK also supports the publication of the magazine TEXTkritische Posts with articles on problems of the Textual criticism , edition and basic research in literary studies .

Self-image

As a cooperative of independent editions and editors , the ITK, founded in 1994, attempts to combine detailed philological research with advanced techniques of text representation. The aim is a practical method of producing modern historical-critical editions in which the traditions of philology and typography are brought into contact with the possibilities opened up by computers and scanners .

The experience gained in dealing with the traditional materials and texts as well as in sentence production should be made transparent to the scientifically and literarily interested public through the publications and other activities of the institute, especially in their interaction.

The ITK board consists of Roland Reuss , Peter Staengle (both Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg ) and Wolfram Groddeck ( University of Zurich ). The editions and other publications supported by the ITK are published and distributed exclusively (in the case of the Gottfried Keller edition together with the Neue Zürcher Zeitung ) by Stroemfeld Verlag ( Frankfurt am Main and Basel ), in which u. a. the works of Georg Trakl and the Frankfurt Hölderlin edition (FHA) have been published. The editions contain the handwritten records both in the form of black and white facsimiles and in digitized form on CD-ROM .

service

On its website, the ITK offers technical aids for editorial work such as a program for type area calculation according to Villard de Honnecourt and Jan Tschichold (Villard), a PostScript font for displaying metric units on the computer (ITKMetrum), a special drawing program and - for the first time - in Stefan George font (St. G. font) available in digitized form . In addition, there is a selection of bibliographies on the work of important authors such as Paul Celan and August Wilhelm Schlegel , facsimile first prints by Friedrich Hölderlin and Franz Kafka and the provision of difficult-to-access works such as Edward Young's Lamentations, or Night Thoughts in the translation of Johann Arnold Ebert from the years 1768 to 1774 or the important reference work The German Printer Language (1900) by Heinrich Klenz .
