Intel chipsets

This is a list of chipsets from Intel for PCs with x86 processors .

The chipsets from Intel differ in terms of equipment and the processors to which they can be connected. They can be divided into several series: chipsets with connection to the ISA bus (300 series), with communication via the PCI bus (400 series), with connection via special hub links (800 series) and those that communicate via PCI Express (900 series and ff.).

Early chipsets

At the time of the rise of the IBM PC XT , a large number of individual chips were required to provide the basic functions of the IBM-compatible computer . Chip manufacturers soon tried to combine several components of this chipset into larger modules in order to reduce costs and space requirements. The functionality remained the same, while the construction of IBM-compatible PCs was significantly simplified.

Intel took over the concept and licensed the POACH chipset from the manufacturer ZyMOS for i286 and i386SX processors, which appeared as the 82230/82231 ( High Integration AT-Compatible Chip Set ). Since then, Intel has offered suitable chipsets for its processors .

Some of the early Intel chipsets:

  • 82091AA Advanced Integrated Peripheral (AIP) - contains floppy disk drive controller, two UARTs , a parallel port , IDE controller, clock generator , and much more.
  • 82310 - for MCA
  • 82350 - for EISA
  • 82350DT - for EISA
  • 82340SX - for AT -compatible computers
  • 82340DX - for AT-compatible computers
  • 82320 - for MCA
  • 82360SL - for the 386SL and 486SL processors with power saving functions. It comprised a DMA controller, programmable interrupt controller ( PIC ), serial and parallel interfaces and, as a special feature, the power-saving logic for the processor.
